What is this? The New Gilded Age?

Wikipedia is just… facts. The Wikimedia Foundation collected and collated those facts using unpaid community members funded in large part by charitable donations over the course of decades. Arguably they have even less right to withhold access to the data they’ve been entrusted with than anyone else in this situation considering the other parties are private entities.

I understand the desire to label anyone supporting the beast that is these AI companies as complicit… but let’s try not to cut off our noses to spite our collective face. It’s not the librarian’s job to make morality decisions about who’s checking out the books, it’s their job to distribute the knowledge and keep the library open.

Man I’ve considered all of those options but… they just take so much commitment lol. My first grill was a cheap one that rusted out in a few years and my second was given to me that’s just died. Now I need to buy a big-boy grill and stick with it and can’t figure out what to decide haha.

How fiddly is the natural gas? Do you have to worry about line length or special cleanings or anything like that?

Lmao, I love that it’s called the “Murica” but no, I hadn’t seen that option before.

I’ve had charcoal before and never really tasted the difference, though that probably says more about my grilling skills than anything lol. And some things (like burgers) make a lot of smoke and just need to be cooked outside, preferably over an open flame. Either way I never really found charcoal to be worth the setup/teardown hassle.

Smoking I feel like it would be one of those things that I’d be stoked about having but never really do that often, so I don’t want to buy something just for that capability.

Realistically how were they going to stop them? I mean, practically speaking.

They offer the entire thing free to download and no slop company has ever hesitated to steal literary work from actual publishing companies and authors that are currently suing them.

Seems to me like their options were get paid or not get paid.

We are a species that seeks unexploited niches for resource optimization. In the past those resources were things that made us directly happy like food and shelter but now we’ve moved on to more abstract concepts like “wealth”. That drive and ability to abstract and outthink our competitors is how we got to the top of the food chain on this planet.

IMO people will come around. Not quickly and not without a bunch of good things about the internet dying off… but eventually an equilibrium will be reached.

It isn’t that people don’t care enough, it’s that they only have so much to go around and there is no cause so important that you get to dictate someone else’s state of mind 24/7 just because you say tragic words. Keep the fire burning but don’t think you get to sneer at others just because they’re burned out at the moment.

They’re consolidating their marketshare and decreasing cost through every method available to increase revenue. All the avenues of piracy have just become the lowest hanging fruit now that these companies aren’t growing anymore.

There’s no free bandwidth just sitting around and waiting to be exploited, Internet 2.0 will have to be discreet or expensive.

Then you’re just going to have the FCC regulating the high-throughput bandwidths until you’re left with the unregulated ones for consumers… like LoRa… and Meshtastic lol.

Going to be hard since the hardware sitting between all those wires cost money to run and… that’s pretty much what ISPs get paid do. They’re assholes who shouldn’t have a say in what goes through those connections but their job isn’t redundant, someone has to do it to maintain those connections.

Same, but don’t buy Xero, they’re trash. Basically flip-flops with a fabric covering imo. And the ones that have survived 2yrs had their rubber harden up like decades old tires.

I’ve been trying “Rutsu” out based on an ad recommendation (yeah yeah, sue me). Time will tell for sure but they’re definitely made better at least.

That’s giving them way too much credit tbh, these guys are too far down (technically “up”) the totem pole. They’ve offloaded their critical thinking and public responsibilities to the first company that said the right keywords. And now that they’re entrenched, they defend them because their ego says they must.
