World News@lemmy.world•Europe prepares to go it alone as Trump returns to war in IranEnglish
32·5 days agoThe sanctions didn’t stop Russia, and the Maginot Line didn’t stop Germany. No system is perfect, but I prefer not to have countries invest in weapons if possible.
You could argue that nuclear weapons managed to deter a third world war, but they also created a very tangible risk of wiping out humanity. I’m not sure I like that trade-off.
Finally, keep in mind that the full effect of the sanctions hasn’t manifested yet. It’ll be a long, long time before Russia recovers from this war, and it’ll be a reminder for all wannabe warmongers of the consequences of invading another countries for quite a while.

World News@lemmy.world•Europe prepares to go it alone as Trump returns to war in IranEnglish
42·5 days agoI have to believe there has to be a better way to avoid wars than an arms race.
IIRC correctly both world wars were preceded by a phase where countries invested in armaments after seeing their neighbors doing the same. And at some point you’re gonna want to use all those weapons you paid for. It’s the proverbial powder keg waiting for a spark.
Instead I’d very much prefer to have a diplomatic solution, where the response to a military buildup is not more military.
We have seen what sanctions are doing to Russia right now, and the full effect of those will be probably felt for years to come regardless of the outcome of that war. Now imagine it was normal to do that not after the war started, but as soon as a country starts to prepare for one. I bet that would make leaders think twice about it.

Games@lemmy.world•Why do modern games have such large file sizes?English
7·8 days agoThey likely mean that if a game is just a few GB in size, people won’t think twice about uninstalling it since they can just quickly download it again if needed.
By making the download bigger and so the installation time longer, it disincentivizes players to do that.

Programming@programming.dev•Open source is a thankless job and I think we've lost the plot on how we treat maintainers
20·11 days agoFrom the license:
THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED “AS IS”, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
It’s the necessary tradeoff of free/open source software. You get something for free and with permission to do (almost) anything with it, but you get no warranties.
If this user had simply pointed out the issue it’d have been totally fine, the dev(s) might have missed it and it’d be helpful to let them know. The entitlement shown here is not OK in any way, regardless of the validity of the point made.

Europe@feddit.org•Hero or troublemaker? Milan prosecutor shakes up Italy's labour practicesEnglish
5·19 days agoI know the article is mostly about workers rights, but it also mentions tax avoidance and I, as a Italian, I’m perpetually mad at my fellow countrymen attitude towards taxes.
Many people here find it very easy to justify avoiding paying taxes whenever they can because they’re so high. And they are, no question about it, but maybe it’s because of all the evasion too?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it okay to express your feelings for someone even if you don't think they reciprocate
2·20 days agoThat’s why you should take it slow and don’t go straight to talking about love.
I don’t think anyone would hate you for asking them out on a date.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is it okay to express your feelings for someone even if you don't think they reciprocate
2·20 days agoThat’s a really bad idea. Don’t do it.
Even if this person likes you and enjoys your company, they won’t appreciate it. It’ll make them feel uncomfortable and wary of you. As others have said, love is way too big a word for someone you’re not in a relationship with.
I know you mean well, but read about love bombing and why it’s bad.
As an aside, be mindful of why you feel you love them. Have you been harboring those feelings for a long time without expressing them? Did you build a future with them in your head? Some of those things can come off as staker-ish if dumped on someone, making them feel you’ve included them in something without their input.

And, I’m not kidding, some higher up said that they need employees at the office so that the parking lot looks nice and full for visiting clients. You can’t make this shit up.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are you gonna be buying a Steam machine?
2·21 days agoI was lucky enough to out together a nice PC just before the AI thing made the prices explode, plus I’ve been a PC gamer all my life (except for the PS1 I had as a kid), so I won’t buy the Machine.
That said, I had high hopes it’d be a success, more so given how well the Controller has sold, and that it’d be the things that brought Linux to lots of people who would never consider it otherwise.
Unfortunately, I fear the price will damped things quite a bit.
