Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Even if you win the lottery abroad, can you bring it all in cash upon returning?
8·2 months agoYou know he doesn’t. The lottery doesn’t pay with fucking cash in duffel bags. Win the lottery my ass.

Technology@lemmy.world•'It doesn’t catch fire': Why China’s "fireproof" sodium battery could be the breakthrough that makes EVs safer than ICE carsEnglish
6·2 months agoEven immersing the car doesn’t really stop it, it kind of just pauses the fire. When it’s surfaced again and starts to dry it tends to self ignite again for a very long time. EV fires are extremely difficult to stop right now and the procedure usually boils down to “Let it burn itself out and keep everything around it from catching too.”

22·3 months agoIt’s fucked up, Cutco knives are actually pretty good. I have a set myself, along with some other stuff on theirs, but the MLM sales scheme is just such dogshit. It’s a weird case where it’s a good product that I absolutely would not suggest to a friend.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Most people actually like living in a little tribe with a king to tell you what to do.
2·3 months agoBeing on an egalitarian network of folks talking doesn’t render you immune, and indeed requires, that stupid statements and stupid ideas be demolished for their own lack of value.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Valve sued by The Performing Right Society for allegedly using its members' musical works "without permission"English
7·3 months agoThis doesn’t appear to be about games that don’t have the proper licenses though. They do, but the licenses don’t mention Steam and some chucklefuck thought that would be the key to making a ton of money.
It’s like suing Spotify because an artist correctly licensed a sample.

Technology@lemmy.world•Discord roll out global age verification system, including an "age inference" model that runs in the backgroundEnglish
54·4 months agoFuck Discord is the common message now, but how about we amplify good alternatives? It’ll be easier to tell Discord to fuck off if we’re already set to move elsewhere.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney supports the $900 million lawsuit against Valve, arguing Steam is "the only major store still holding onto payment ties and 30% junk fee" [refer to in-app purchases]English
622·5 months agoWell Timmy that should make it pretty easy to make a platform that both users and content producers like more. If you actually try to compete you might accomplish something.

6·5 months agoI would rather pay money than use Epic, not because I don’t want another launcher but because it’s Epic.

1·5 months agoThat also assumes they got it on Epic in the first place, instead of the increased awareness of the game leading them to decide to get it, just from Steam instead.

Games@lemmy.world•Valve dev counters calls to scrap Steam AI disclosures, says it's a "technology relying on cultural laundering, IP infringement, and slopification"English
9·7 months agoI haven’t really seen demands for lower prices on AI slop, but I’ve seen a lot of outright refusal to buy at any price, and returns when the disclosure came later.

Climate@slrpnk.net•California Governor Newsom plays climate warrior, compromiser and coy candidate2·7 months agoWell yeah. Newsome is 100% politics, he plays the game. The only principal he sticks to is the one that directly benefits him. He will say what he thinks gets the votes he needs, even and especially if it means trying to appeal to shitty cuntservatives who might lean into centrist, or corpos who might throw campaign contributions at him.

The difference is that in going to the past you have some idea of how things played out and what changes might matter. The changes that come up in time travel discussions are things like “kill this person before they do anything” or “let this guy into art school” or “cancel this one particular flight.” By the time the real consequences of possible small changes are known, you need more than small changes to acheve your objective.
