Kerryposting was a year long wrecker campaign against the site in which thousands of accounts were created to do nothing but spam pictures of John Kerry. They would get banned within minutes but they continued this for a very long time. They used bots for this and mass created thousands of accounts that they held on ice to use later, it was a real moderation pain.
It was possibly the most persistent wrecker campaign I’ve seen against any site, ever. So they get some points of respect from me purely for that. It went on for so long.
John Kerry is a thought, a world historical sidekick, a prism through which light itself may shine.

Back in the very first days of the site, when it was chapo chat instead of hexbear, there was some drama in the discord lifeboat that the site founders were originally working from. Someone from the old sub and that discord, Zara IIRC, went around accusing one of the admins and the discord mods of (among other things) “censoring MLs” and tried to stir shit up on the lemmy.ml community that would later become lemmygrad and get spun off into its own site, and her and her followers started spamming pictures of Clinton’s VP and just saying his name over and over for some reason until it became a bannable offense as a signal someone was just around to start shit.
I believe other raiders also picked it up later because they thought it was funny people would get banned for it.

No need to fill your brain with that knowledge. He ran as Hillary Clinton’s VP, but she didn’t win so nobody really cares now. The person above confused John Kerry and Al Gore (who was Bill Clinton’s VP when he was President).
Every 8 years the Democrats try to salvage their presidential ticket by scrounging up a running-mate who is a likeable yet anodyne middle-aged dad named Tim.

It disturbs me that I instantly found Kerry in the first place I looked. I have seen this picture too many times and spent too long doing Where’s Wally books as a kid.

I think this is inaccurate because I think lemmygard existed before the subreddit was banned.
Also Kerry was the 2004 candidate against W, not Clinton’s VP pick. That was Tim Kaine. Kerry was Obama’s Secretary of State at one point, and all around just an east coast liberal elite doofus.
It was Zara and one other user – I forget whom – that accused said moderator of drawing furry CSAM because they did a piece of chibi artwork for a friend that was separate from any sexualized stuff that might have been in their backlog of other drawings. The whole thing strained credulity, so naturally, the mature and adult thing to do was to slap together a piss-poor attempt at a botnet to spam “John Kerry” on a leftist forum.
I don’t know if I can corroborate the timing of 'Grad spinning of from communism.lemmy.ml – I do remember that the Lemmy site pre-dated the /r/CTH ban by quite a bit, along with our early forays into trying to start up a community over on Raddle before Ziq started acting like, well, Ziq.

I actually confused Kerry for Al Gore somehow, probably because they both ran against Bush in the early 2000s.
Easy way to distinguish them:

I know the community that would become lemmygrad existed, and might have been called that, but I honestly can’t remember if it was already it’s own site and lemmy instance at that point. I thought it was still on lemmy.ml, but it might not have been, I just remember coming across Zara’s big rant while looking for the old sub’s lifeboat. I also remember that there was next to no activity either there or on lemmy back then, and that even early chapochat when people were still filtering in was orders of magnitude more active than them.
I think you’re mostly correct I think I remember checking out Lemmy waaay back before the sub ban and it was just .ml and grad hanging out. Hopefully someone can come by and set it straight (in case a future Hexbear historian wants to reference this thread someday)
