there is no such focus, vegans go to great lengths to distance themselves from vegetarians and the like exactly because veganism is not just a diet

It’s not just about food. There’s all the other ways in which humans exploit animals: labor, test subjects, zoo exhibits, raw materials (leather, down) etc. Also all of the resource usage, labor, abysmal land use, and pollution that goes into maintaining these practices.
