The EMH mark 1 was discontinued (only as a doctor, they continued to operate as miners) for being irritable and having bad bedside manner, not because they were narcissistic. They were based on Zimmerman’s personality who was also a bit brusque and irritable. Those qualities are fine in an engineer, not so much in a doctor.
