Talk therapy seems to also include a lot of different categories?

I’m trying not to waste my time and i only get a certain amount of therapy stuff on my extended benefits

Depending on your exact needs, you might consider trying cognitive behavioral therapy, if it’s accessible to you. It’s a type of talk therapy that incorporates practical techniques intended to change negative behaviors and thought patterns. YMMV, but my partner underwent CBT and experienced a good bit of success with it.

      • Behaviors aren’t just how you act on things. Do you want to change thought patterns like guilt, doubt, anxiety, or depression? What’s actually bothering you?

Seeking therapy is something people typically do when they want or need something to change. It isn’t typically something people seek out because everything is great and there are no problems in one’s life at all.

Something like Interpersonal Therapy is typically a shorter term modality but could help you with navigating the guilt trip machine related to being LC/NC with your mom.

Thank you for the reply. I certainly wouldn’t say there’s no problems in my life but you might be the first person I’ve interacted with about this topic who has articulated that there should be an actual reason to do therapy. I have heard “everyone should go to therapy” multiple times and so many variations of “<group> will literally do <thing> instead of go to therapy” that I have always figured it’s just a thing people with the means should be doing.

All that being said, i will look into interpersonal therapy. I appreciate the suggestion

          • Everyone should be going to therapy, but they should understand the reason they’re doing it and have an actual goal. I think there’s a common perception that therapy is or can be a place to just talk about like “white people problems” or the minor day-to-day stuff that irks you but doesn’t truly impact you. This is a largely useless modality and you’re just wasting a professional’s time in addition to your own. These people often feel like they have nothing to talk about during the session.

Many people may feel that there is nothing in their life that needs to be changed, but that’s a sign that they need to do more introspection instead of a sign that they don’t need therapy. A human being can’t spend decades being alive in society without having something that hurts or needs changing, whether or not you acknowledge or are even aware of it.

Therapy should be your brain’s equivalent of things like rotating your tires and getting your oil changed. Crack that noggin open, so to speak. As someone who’s also LC with my mother, you might find it useful to discuss with a professional why you had to do that and the ways in which that relationship left lasting impact on your psyche.

I don’t think I’ve done either of those in a long time either lol

              I appreciate the advice

I have managed to find quite a few good talk therapists who align with me ideologically. Some even have practices nearby to me.

I just ask a chatbot to search psychologytoday.com or google.com for therapists who are aligned with “moral pessimism” and/or who offer counseling related to “colonial trauma” who offer remote sessions or who practice within 25 miles of [enter your zip code].

It seems to work, every time. Found comrades to talk to twice now.
