Economically, Americans are already serfs. Wealth inequality was slightly better for serfs than current Americans.

First, there is corporate gouging. Anyone owning stocks wants to see a return, not a moderate one but a big one, on their investment. Second, it isn’t a straight one to one employee to patient ratio. 24 hour care is 8760 hours per year and full time work is 2000 (with 2 weeks paid vacation) meaning 4.38 employee years for 24hrs, 365 days. It isn’t quite that much because staffing is never 1:1. If it were 1:1, at $20 per hour paid to the caregiver, with vacation, sick days, health care, CPP, EI, WCB, it is a minimum of $58,000 per employee. That alone would work out to $4800 per month without housing, food, cleaning, equipment. It isn’t cheap to house people who cannot live independently. We need a different model for care to keep the costs lower while providing care that is necessary. This used to all be “free” in-home by older women (Boomer, Silent Gen, Greatest Gen) and still often is, if they cannot access care for family members. Much like child care, that again women used to do for 'free", it costs real money to have someone else cover that work.

Said like anything from legacy manufactures is better quality.

North American workers aren’t earning much more than they did 20-30 years ago while vehicle sales prices went up 8-10x. So no, it isn’t workers’ wages driving the difference. Executive pay, stock buybacks & dividends, lobbying, advertising have all increased multiple times more than EE pay packages.

Right you’re going to stop eating, using water, living in a shelter, wearing clothes all because the current businesses are gone? People have ‘worked’ for millenia longer than capitalism has existed. We work in order to live.

Here in BC too many tourists do use Google maps and get into trouble. At least these idiots didn’t lose their lives, that happens annually.

Somehow I think AI execs missed the part that if there is money, land, fuel and water enough to build hundreds of data centers the size of towns, then there should be the same available to house & feed the people of the nation. If there is far more capital to be thrown in the garbage to try to get top billing on a product that doesn’t yet work and may never work, it is impossible to believe that the problems assailing 50%0or more of the population cannot be addressed.

Given that the first 35 years of our lives, my husband and I accumulated photos that fit into about 20 albums and I can find photos from any time or event with ease. In the next 25 years we have maybe 100x as many and I can never locate the ones I’m looking because there are so F-ing many. I hope most of them get permanently lost! Plus, while I can get our kids to look as some of the ones in albums, I can never get them to look through the endless scroll of the ones online, even if I limit it one trip or event when there might only be a few hundred photos.

Americans may be misleading themselves if they think that all the damage Trump has done will suddenly be undone once he is gone. Most people outside the US see Trump as holding up a mirror to what America really is that was previously cloaked in some level of diplomacy so it wasn’t so readily shown to the world. Plus the US used to have the money to buy goodwill but Trump is doing his best to bankrupt the company (country) while lining his own pockets, the only skill in which he has prior demonstrated ability.

Just like almost every industy in the US. Agriculture - heavily subsidized. Fossil fuels - heavily subsidized. Medicine - heavily subsidized (even if the patients don’t see any of it). Defense contractors of every shade - heavily subsidized. Only difference is that the US subsidizes to help the billionnaires. China subsidizes to help the general populace.

As they should be. If I recognized anyone wearing them I would yell ‘pervert glasses on this guy’ to everyone in the vicinity.

So do not buy them. If sales fall enough, they will bring back physical media. If you keep buying no matter what they do, of course they will keep doing it.

I feel bad for Americans who didn’t have much choice in Trump being elected. However that is tempered by the fact that they are not inudating their congressmen and senators to get rid of Trump. They are timidly waiting for the next set of elections hoping that will change things although Trump has already meddled enough that even a landslide vote against him may not change a single thing. Write, email, text and phone your elected officials and tell them to get rid of him.

Russia should remain banned. However in fairness many other countries should also be banned. How can Israel or the US be allowed if Russia isn’t? Ukraine if fine, they are only defending themselves and are not the aggressor. Some others are harder to determine. As long as the US is allowed, there really isn’t any high ground to use for excluding other countries.

Vinyls don’t corrode over time. We have vinyl from 80 years ago. Still good. We have CDs from 90s that no longer play. And itunes that have completely disappeared unless than 20years.

It really sucks that the Canadian government isn’t also helping Cuba. I am very disappointed in our governments extremely inadequate response to the US’s illegal shakedown of Cuba.
