Police can be corrupt and have issues, but a world without them would be fucked.

People act like it’s just as simple as removing police and the world would be amazing, but that’s the naive world view imo. You need to actually go through some shit to realize how important they are even if imperfect.

  • Some interesting points, and some things I disagree with.

Firstly it’s annoying he keeps calling it his idea and trying to enforce this concept that the current internet needs to align with his original goals. That’s stupid and ignores that things will go where they go, he can’t control them.

So his first point about centralisation being an issue isn’t that big a grievance. But his second point rings true - the issues around our data and advertising have grown significantly and the Web is getting much worse as a result.

I actually think the solution is just government needs to step in and regulate it, along the lines of what the EU is doing. Realistically I think that’s the only solution that’ll help. Doing some grassroots movement and hoping it picks up steam is just unrealistic. Like looking at Lemmy and Mastadon - they’re great but at this pace they’ll never take over the other giants in the space. You need someone to step in and force the change.

  • Not sure I understand tbh. Seems exactly the same?

You get banned in a reddit community you can’t access it, you get banned in a lemmy community you can’t access it.

I’ve been banned from reddit communities and can still access reddit. If you’ve been banned from Reddit completely you must have done some terrible shit.

In your example, you’re also suggesting a transphobic person has more scope on Lemmy to continue being transphobic than on Reddit. That’s not a good thing?

I am quite confused by your post tbh.

  • It depends on the context as always.

Sealioning as genuine trolling is shitty and done in bad faith.

But it is completely fair to call out people and ask them for evidence when they make broad statements that are easily verifiable like “black people are more violent than white people” or “Republicans are just as unfriendly towards poor people as Democrats” Etc.

But yeah, here without the context it’s easy to get confused what Sealioning actually is.

Who cares if it is on Steam or not though?

If everything was on everything then sure, that would be great. But that’s not realistic, and having this alternative where everything is on Steam but not elsewhere is not a good solution for that because Steam will be shit one day, and already has quite a few shitty issues.

Honestly, people have this ridiculous view of PC gaming and Steam sometimes. Look around the world and show me where having one company having a massive hold over that sector has ever worked out well long term for consumers.

Lol as someone else put it, it’s silly to complain that you won’t buy a game because it doesn’t use the marketplace you want to use.

Steam is just one marketplace and it needs competition. One day it’s going to go through enshittification and when that happens you’ll be thankful other marketplaces exist.

Sometimes I honestly wonder why PC gamers get so riled up over inconsequential things.
