I’ve seen a few graphs in my day, and they generally don’t do that. Sure, it could happen, but it almost certainly won’t. :(

That said, the US and China both making steady progress is very good, but then again, a Trump presidency certainly might see some of that reverse.

I think the big questions is: how do we get Russia and India to curb their emissions? If India follows China’s per capita curve, but with a 20 year delay, it’ll be disastrous. They’re going to need significant help to continue industrializing without seeing a huge rise in emissions.

I don’t think I’d have seen this coming even 5 years ago, but China really might be positioned to be a global climate leader.

Good point. Guess it just indicates how unpredictable he is. Just like how he said he’d build a wall, then built a little chunk of wall. It’s all about doing the minimum possible to placate his base.

Yeah, sure, he doesn’t care about tradition, I get that. But it also seems to me Trump has always been fairly anti-China. Ofc he’s also plenty happy to misrepresent his intent if it makes his base happy, so maybe that part was just a facade?

Isn’t this a bit of a predicament for Trump? Traditionally the US has supported Taiwan’s independence, and it seems to me that’d be continued under Trump’s “China bad” rhetoric/policy. However, getting chummy with Putin might require rescinding support for Taiwan’s independence.

Am I missing something here?

Honestly, in a managed environment, there’s not really much learning to do. All the hard part of learning Linux is dealing with system issues, or when shit breaks. In corporate land, you’ve got IT staff for that.

The biggest hurdle would be learning libre office, but considering the average white collar level of mastery of MS office is pretty poor, the basics really aren’t that different in LO.

I honestly fully sympathize with you. We have the same thing here. “Vote ABC - Anything But Conservative”, but actually that means just vote Liberal. And now that the Liberal party is floundering, I don’t think Liberals will be singing the same tune to strategically vote NDP (labour/social democrat). They’d rather burn the country to the ground, than to give anyone even a hair’s width left of centre any power.

I get real irate about the “must vote dem or you’ll never get third party” because its gaslighting.

Normally I’d agree with you, but if you guys get Trump, he’s going to do everything in his power to not leave after 4 years, 8 years, etc. You might not have the opportunity to vote 3rd party until he keels over, and he’s going to make that time hell for any non-white non-cis-male non-red-hat-wearer.

I’ve been following US politics for years, so yeah, I know the drill. I live close enough that y’all’s politics directly effect us too, so it’s important to stay informed. (Hello from the great white north. :)

I won’t argue about the ratchet effect. I totally agree. My concern is that if Trump wins, you could very well go from a 2 party system to a 1 party system, and lose any ability to ever vote 3rd party.

I’d like it if you could do no fascism this election, but in lieu of that possibility I’d prefer the facism in 4-8 years, buying you guys some time to fix things, rather than the facism now and potentially in perpetuity.

With all do respect, I live somewhere where we actually have a viable 3rd and even fourth party candidate, who I’m happy to vote for. I’ve voted for the lesser evil in the past, and it always feels bad. I’m telling you this because I empathise with your position, and I agree that in theory to have viable 3rd parties, people like you do indeed need to vote for them.

What scares the shit out of me, though, is that Trump is backed into a corner. His only choice to guarantee he doesn’t see the inside of a jail cell is to extend his term indefinitely. We all know he’d do it if he could, he’s said so himself.

So the question, then, becomes: how much faith do you have in the guardrails of the system to stay a democracy? SCOTUS has already been stacked, and the recent presidential immunity scope increase is just waiting to be abused.

Never in my life has your democracy been in such real peril, and, disappointingly, there is only one person you can vote for to defend it. I hope your ideals are worth risking falling directly into totalitarianism over.

If you still can’t understand why this one is actually different, I’m not sure there’s much more I can say.

Unfettered capitalism is strangling the working class. People are angry that they’re worse off than their parents were, and looking for someone to blame. Failure to keep corporate power in check is causing both climate change and the rise of populism and authoritarianism.

It’s interesting that the effect magnitude and significance are both higher for negative emotions than positive ones.

I mean, it’s fairly common knowledge that we remember negative emotional experiences more strongly than positive ones, but it’s interesting to see that supported here.

Yeah, I just recently upgraded from a first gen i7. The performance gain is substantial, but less necessary than you’d think. I’d probably have kept going with my trusty i920 a bit longer if it wasn’t for lack of AVX.

Agreed. In the long term it’s better for consumers if there is competition, but that also means being an informed consumer, making good buying decisions and not being blindly loyal to any particular brand.
