The article itself looks like it’s written with AI. Inconsistencies, repetitions, dull language and an unnecessary bullet point summary at the end. While I haven’t read the actual study, nothing in the article seems to explain what makes this causation instead of correlation.

Personally I’m a bit annoyed with articles like these because they try to create the impression that criticism of AI only stems from it being too powerful, instead of recognizing that the technology has very real capability limits. What is presented as two opposing viewpoints is effectively just one. AI boosters and AI doomers are both strong believers in something that hasn’t happened yet and probably won’t happen for a very long time.

This doesn’t solve the privacy issue. It still enables bad actors to create a very detailed profile of who you are, just by looking at the content you upvoted. Your interests, political alignment, medical/mental health issues, sexual orientation… just to name a few.

We should all know by now that there are bad actors actively using this kind of data in the worst ways imaginable. In the US this can already have life threatening consequences (ICE raids etc…)

This is not a good privacy oriented design and it exposes users in a dangerous way.

The problem with this is unfortunately that if you miss the perfect moment you’re in for a catastrophic loss. If you’re not an insider it’s not worth the risk. We all know it’s going to happen, but it’s near impossible to predict when, from the outside. Those companies could manage to keep themselves alive in a financial circlejerk for a long time and the current environment of complete lawlessness in the US does not help in making it predictable either.

Sorry you had this experience. Not all of us are like that though. I just thought of my own experience and I usually try to find an answer with a web search instead of asking in a forum. Most of the time someone else already had the problem and was brave enough to ask. This is especially true for beginner problems. As rough as some of those people can be, there already is a tutorial for almost anything imaginable. And it goes both ways. Don’t ask for stuff that can easily be found on the web. (I’m not implying you did, this is just a general tip)

That’s exactly the reason why you get good results when prompting a chatbot. You have the knowledge to ask the right questions with the needed keywords and lingo. What’s problematic is that Microslop and big tech in general are advertising AI as a generic tool for everyone and their grandmother. The result is garbage in, garbage out. I think they aren’t happy with people self-censoring their posts to please an algorithm. It’s not about their right to self-censor but users feel they have to do it to avoid penalties when they should not have to. Those mild forms of self-censorship are only the beginning. On Youtube you can already see people re-inventing newspeak by replacing ordinary words like “killed” with “unalived” to avoid algorithmic penalties. That’s fucked up.

Otherwise anyone can discredit your concerns with a few questions you have no answer to. Secondly, find allies instead of trying to accomplish this on your own. True. It’s also a good idea to check for Linux compatibility before buying hardware. That’s an annoying extra step to do, and makes it harder for new users. But on the other hand, there are now more vendors including this info on their own, and a lot of hardware is pretty much standardized (like USB HID devices etc).

You might have been unlucky. I never had serious installation issues when installing Ubuntu on a lot of different computers in the past five years. Just started the installer, click next a few times and reboot into the new installation. It used to be some tinkering required to get everything to work, but apart from having to enable the proprietary Nvidia driver in a GUI (and having to search for it) everything else just worked. My last Windows install however was a shitshow. Took ages and I had to disable a ton of surveillance stuff. On top of that I had to go through some weird hoops to keep the thing from requiring me to create a Microsoft account. What distro did you use? I guess some are more difficult than others

There is no anti-EU sentiment among the democratic parties. Even right-leaning CDU party members know this would weaken Germany’s position in the world. Germany is an export-heavy economy and their military force is a joke (by design). Losing EU trade benefits and weakening ties to the EU allies would be extremely unwise.
