It’s easy to interpret his message as negative because of depression, which is doubly ironic given the context of this conversation.

That’s what he is saying in a bad way. The people in the comic are technically right, but since you think you deserve the punishment, you are stuck. If you manage to get away from that negative thinking, you’ve done the biggest part of getting out of depression, and from there it is easier to do the rest without the destructive self esteem.

Using the term “unhoused people” just shifts the narrative to “we just need to put them in houses”, be that new government funded housing projects, or changing regulations to dissalow empty houses, or stopping short term rental from eating central houses in cities.

Humans can still be a cancer without killing them all. We can CURE cancer cells (maybe in the future). We can MANAGE cancer cells, stopping their destructive appetite for more and more energy (uncontrolled capitalism). Opting for killing the worst of them, but not all + the host. We can PREVENT spread of cancer to other cells (countries), stopping the opportunity of the cancer to live in the future. Eventually the cancer will die out a natural death.

Cancerous might be a hyperbole of our built in greed though. Humankind is a pest on the planet though. We consume too much and adapt our surroundings to us, not us adapting to our surroundings.

As someone else said above, it is hard to calculate exactly how much they gained.

Instead using a set % of revenue would be simpler. If enough companies do it, raise the %. If someone repeatedly does it relative to others, raise the % for them on each repeated case.

That way it is simple, but still scalable and adjustable.

Similarly, scale it down if it disproportionate to how much is saved by breaking the law, or how much it hurts the society , to ensure it is a just punishment, and not a tool for big corporations to hurt smaller ones etc.
