For example they claim that “middle class” starts at 38k per household income, which is below the poverty level for most states with a 3 person household.

I think most men just lack the perspective of just how vulnerable women are compared to men. I am 6’3 with a cut weight around 245lb and I have to be mindful about how I carry myself, or how closely I walk near people to not make people of any sex uncomfortable. There’s a reason a big jolly guy is a stereotype, no one is comfortable around a large dude with an attitude.

Well the confusing thing is that they had helicopters overfly them multiple times as they made their climb and both failed to signal and continued their way to the summit. The person on trial claims that she was doing fine until right after the last flyover and then suddenly started to get worse.
As someone with a mild amount of cold weather experience… I don’t really believe this at all. If I were a betting guy I would wager that she was already suffering from the mental affects of hypothermia. You can enter a super suggestive state the colder you get and your mental faculties and decision making ability rapidly deteriorate to the point where you can get lost and just start walking in circles.

Yeah… I’m a transplant here and it definitely makes it hard to move back out of the state. I’ve gotten offers for jobs that pay quite a bit more in nicer places, but it’d be hard to have a mortgage again.
I usually just use the offers to wrangle a pay increase and now make a bit more than my nation wide average. Depending on your field the starting pay here is usually pretty bad, but most companies are willing to do large increases in salaries because they know everyone with an education is looking to move away.
$300-400k is about what I’d spend on a home and you can’t find much better than that for the same price in 3rd-tier Colorado cities.
Yeah… Colorado prices have gotten pretty ridiculous in the last couple decades. I remember when you could have bought a mansion there for that much if you weren’t looking at Denver or Colorado springs.

That’s a hard ask anymore in any state that isn’t filled to the brim with assholes. Tbh even like places like Minneapolis or Portland the areas surrounding the cities where you can still buy acreage are mostly filled with a bunch of reactionaries that are sometimes more ferocious than in places in the south they don’t feel like they’re being cornered.
You might try to widen your search to include some more conservative states that have progressive cities in them. For example Madison or Milwaukee are pretty nice if you don’t mind the cold.
Tbf so is mine, but in the opposite direction. My current home is a 2 bedroom 1 bath a bit larger than the house op posted. When I got it it was probably in a bit worse condition, but I bought it from the bank for a little less than 40k.

As far as Portland itself, the city is fairly nice. However, anywhere the homes are somewhat affordable even near the outskirts of the metro is filled with turbo racist. The cops are also really aggressive for the west coast if you aren’t white. I’ve visited friends there and I have been pulled over less than when I’ve visited the rural south.

I mean it’s definitely both… Congress has empowered the executive to an incredible degree, and this has been rarified by the judiciary.
Plus, most people ignore most elections other than when electing a new president. So your presidential candidate has a huge influence over the makeup and political agenda of Congress.

Eh… That’s debatable. The modern democratic party being center right is kinda a byproduct of Thirdway politics. Which was largely popularized by the party leaders itself, specifically by the Clinton’s.
Bill Clinton rose to power by advocating for compromise as a way to get through the growing gridlock in Congress. This worked for his career, but it gave the Republican party a huge amount of influence over defining what that middle ground was. They would work with Democratic candidates with policy that served their purposes and completely ignore the ones that served anyone left of center.
This had the overall effect of not only controlling policy in congress, but actually being able to vicariously control the opposition. As time went on the only people who reached seniority in the DNC were those who would compromise with the rnc to create a “mutually” beneficial policy.
Don’t worry… Our next president will be a center right candidate and be declared both a rabid leftist and simultaneously the saviour of democracy. They’ll only predator drone strike a few weddings, thus securing their Nobel peace prize. Everything will return to normal, with just a little shift of the Overton window to the right. But hey, at least it won’t be Trump and full on fascism…
All sarcasm aside, the older I get the more headlines give me dejavu. I can remember article like this after the Gulf war where I felt like other countries were actually stepping away from America’s lead, and then the Clinton’s rose to power to make things better. Then Bush v2 and Afghanistan and then Obama promised to make it all better. Now we have trump and I’m beginning to wonder what kind of centerist compromise the Democrats are cooking up.
History may not repeat itself but it sure does rhyme, and seemingly the tune it does it to just gets worse every iteration.
While I applaud any government for attempting to better the environment, I really wish this project was done with more forethought.
Unfortunately they have done this forestation primarily with fast growing poplar and willow trees, making a vast monoculture that wont likely last in such a harsh climate for more than a decade.
Without the natural biodiversity that supports a living Forrest ecology, it only takes one disease or pest to wipe all that effort. In the end it might do more harm than good when considering the amount of ground water something like this will take out of the water cycle.

Yeah, it is always the most frustrating feeling just seeing weeks of work go down the drain. Two years ago we had a really wet spring and then a really dry summer, somehow the combo made the grasshoppers go crazy. They ate my whole garden in like two days, made me feel like I was in the dust bowl.

Yeah, this is pretty much the only way to survive. Gardening alone isn’t really enough to feed yourself, especially without the help of modern petrochemical derived fertilizers and pesticide.
It really takes a community to grow enough food that you won’t be starving in the off-season. I have a fairly substantial organic garden and I wouldn’t really want to rely on it alone. Ive had too many seasons where a blight or bug just rips through them.
