I was able to get a used Honda Fit for a reasonable price last year and paid it in full. I’m so glad I did, in addition to living in a commutable city.

I have my car as an option if I absolutely need it (which is rare). I only have to pay for insurance. It’s tiny so it’s easy to park, it uses almost no gas, and it can fit four people plus luggage. I can easily leave my city if I need to. I love the damn thing.

But I’ll also emphasize that it’s secondary to living in a commutable city

We use rolly carts in NYC and make more frequent trips. It’s also not uncommon to stop by Trader Joe’s or the supermarket on your way home. The best carts are those with the weird tri-wheels that go up and down stairs.

My experience so far: I instantly made a bunch of friends and the locals seem happy to have me here. Many are curious about the US, many also understand what’s going on. I don’t experience the same level of elitism I’m used to back in the states as an immigrant (even after 2+ decades). There is also SIGNIFICANTLY less catcalling, I somehow get way more compliments??? Oh and did you know ketchup was actually supposed to taste good? (Hint: it’s all the corn syrup)

Canada. I understand the risk of living next to a problem ex and Canada is by no means perfect either, but a) I’m honestly enjoying life here more and have a solid group of friends, and b) I simply would not be safe staying in the US as a tan skinned immigrant trans woman.
