  • My job is making everyone use AI for everything (while also not keeping staff levels up)

I hate it. Even when it works I kind of hate it.

I’ve been using it as a search supplement for like “how do I make a uuid in a GitHub action and use it in future steps” stuff. Sometimes it works. I’d kind of rather have well written docs.

  • Once, I got a whole pizza pie from the place down the street, and ate it while hanging with my cat and playing some nice single player games.

Another time, a friend of mine surprise ordered me Indian food. Ate it while playing video games with the cat.

Different time, was cat sitting for a friend. She ordered me a pie, which I ate while playing games and chilling with the cat.

    All were pretty good, really.

The why was “I’m not that close with my family, don’t want to travel, and I’m not seeing anyone who invited me”

  • CEOs and other managers that are like “you should do more work for me for free” are bad people who should not be allowed to lead

Like my old CEO at a startup wanted people to work nights and weekends to hit deadlines. I’m like, if we make it big you get rich and I get the same salary. That’s a horrible deal for me. Give me a lot of equity and we’ll talk.

    • gym teacher manager. Not great at the math and science parts, but believes in his team
    • checked out youth. Watches YouTube instead of working.
    • checked out elder. He’s so close to retiring. He’s got stories to tell from before HR was all formalized
    • checked out middle career guy. He wanted to fix things. Then he fell into the tar pit. Why bother when a ten minute fix is going to take two research spikes, a stakeholder meeting, a team meeting, a feedback meeting, a sprint planning meeting and so on. Fuck it.
    • day care HR. Do they work? Who knows. They seem nice, when you can find them.
    • quiet union sympathizer. Got a “talking to” about it, so now he just shit talks management in back channels. Joins meetings smoking from his back porch. Knows where some bodies are buried.

I work at a bad place.

  • With 3 million dollars in liquid assets (ie: not a house), you can bring in about $120k from the safest of investments. Just a high yield savings account. Fully insured.

With an index fund, you can bring in $300k.

That’s enough to live on, given how many people live on that much or less from their job.

So some millionaires may work, but they’re not really the same.

  • I’d love to see reductions in car usage because I very much dislike cars and car culture. I don’t personally mind inconvenience - I wait for mass transit when friends are like “just take an Uber lol” (not even touching the labor dimension there). I also always say electric cars and self driving cars are solving the wrong problems.

I’m just pessimistic that we’ll make much progress voluntarily. A lot of people are stupid and selfish, and the rich have power to keep things shitty for their personal benefit.
