  • I tried to go to University for CS but never quite got the hang of the math part. Instead I got a Certification in Computer Science from an apprenticeship (idk if that’s the right Translation, in German we call it “Fachinformatiker für Anwendungsentwicklung”) within 1.5 years and with extreme ease, because it was way less math-heavy and more focused on actual programming.

I stayed with the company that I did the apprenticeship with and got promoted from Junior to Regular within a year. I work exactly in the field and position I wanted to work in when I was going for the CS degree. In fact, I have the exact same responsibilities and the same pay as my colleagues with CS degrees. It might not be like that in every company, but it did work out for me.

Just for fun, I actually went back to Uni this semester to try and actually finish one or two math modules, but dropped out within 2 weeks because I was hopelessly incapable of even understanding the basic concepts lol

  • Idk how it is for other industries, but we Software Engineers usually get a system where the ranks are Junior, Regular and Senior.

Junior is the Entry level position, I’ve never seen a company around here be super unreasonable with the requirements. The max they ask for is some personal experience with some specific tech stacks and general willingness to learn new stuff. They know it’s silly to ask for any work experience at that level and know that any hire will need quite a lot of support.

  • e-Bikes are crazy nowadays. Their original concept of “you get a little motor in your pedals to help you climb hills” has been killed by an arms race of “hey, our motors are the strongest! Our bikes are the fastest!”

My parents recently bought new ebikes with the “best” specs and they’re awful. You basically can’t touch the pedals without being catapulted forward, even at the lowest setting. And they drive them set to the highest speed all the time because more speed === better ???

I get that when you’re driving to work or something you want to be fast, but they’re only using those bikes for leisure… so like who cares whether the bike goes 25 km/h or 15 km/h? God forbid your morbidly obese ass gets some actual exercise

Which is why the eBike I bought recently is a 2010 Raleigh Pedelec. The supporting motor is super gentle (people in 2010 would have been freaked out by today’s ebikes) and it doesn’t really go over 20-25 km/h. It belonged to a 80 year old woman originally. That’s exactly the kinda vibe I’m going for haha
