Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•I wish the Steam Controller used AA batteriesEnglish
642·21 days agoNot downvoting you, but you’re not being reasonable. Serviceable means actually serviceable. It might be “better” to use AA batteries but if they can’t, the next best thing would be that it can be serviced by the actual end consumer. And yeah if you’re planning on fixing your own things you may need to own a screwdriver.

Tech@programming.dev•Linux Hits 3% Usage on Valve’s Steam Gaming Platform
16·1 month agoI’d like to point out that after Linux first hit the 1% mark back in 2021, it took three years to reach 2%. Now, just a year later, it’s already climbed another full percentage point — a clear sign of how quickly it’s growing as a gaming platform.
This is rad

71·2 months agoThat’s a really weirdly passive aggressive way to respond. I don’t want either of these devices, but you posted a shit article about nothing.

3·2 months agoI remember waiting like 10 minutes with a loading window for Monster Hunter Rise to compile shaders at one point a while back and I had no idea what that meant then… (but yeah obviously most games do it more elegantly)

181·2 months agoI only know this because I recently started doing some game development (as opposed to just being a gamer for 30 years); Shaders are little programs that run directly on your graphics card. They’re all over the place in games, doing stuff like making objects glow, morphing/transforming objects, and in 3D games, they’re also doing a lot of the work of lighting effects and details that you would want to see in order to actually see the game’s final product. When you start a game it will (either in the foreground or background) compile (build for your computer) all of the shaders designed in the game, but I guess this needs to happen on each computer. If they re-coded some of the shaders in the game to be more efficient/use fewer resources and ultimately make the game run faster, the ones in the previous release would need to be completely recompiled.
(I’m sure someone will be along to correct any inaccuracies in that.)
What I think is odd though is that game companies are throwing that around like anyone has any idea what they’re talking about though.
This doesn’t super solve your immediate problem, but it might help you keep progress on your game:
Remember — it’s a game. Maybe yes, you could calculate the area of the polygon you drew, and then you’d have it working like that for good. But then what happens if you want to fudge a number, like the area calculates that 2 troops can fit in France but for balance you really want 3? At that point you’re going to need to fudge the calculation, add another factor or redraw your polygon (the latter which might not be possible).
An alternative way to solve this is you can look up on wikipedia the different areas of these countries. You can assign a factor for each one (like Risk does) based on various factors - area, population, etc, but ultimately balance, that allows you to set whatever you want on each country. Not that the math isn’t exciting, but you’re probably going to end up doing this anyway after you figure the math out.
This comic is routinely terrible trash.

84·3 months agoSigh. There are just too many things to play, do, worry or think about to fuck around with people who have already shown you who they are. I liked the original game, like 20 years ago, and I’ve liked hundreds or thousands of other things in between. What I’m trying to say is these people can go fuck themselves. I don’t care if it’s the publisher, it’s the whole crew they came in here with. Fuck off.
Yes, because I was talking to the other person who’s been all over this thread talking about their specific experience.
Are you the person (alt) I was asking this of?
That’s not what I’m asking. You designed or built something for some users. They didn’t like it, or didn’t use it as you expected. Was your response to change the software or blame the users for not using it correctly?
In all your software deployments did you blame the users for not getting it or did you redesign the software because it sucked (according to your users)?
Maybe you should read a book friend.
You’re telling me you cant keep track of 30-45 simple chirps off a standard reference cricket in a 15 second period? Did you even go to school dude?

3·3 months agoAfter being out of being a direct practitioner, I will say all my direct reports are “faster” in programs we use at work than I am, but I’m still waaaaaaaaaay more efficient than all of them (their inefficiencies drive me crazy actually), but I’ve also taken up a lot of development to keep my mind sharp. If I only had my team to manage and not my own personal projects, I could really see regressing a lot.
