My child is 6. I have them do 10-20 min of guided reading daily, meaning I sit with them and help where needed. They read mostly on their own though. I started because school was basically not teaching anything and giving half assed explanations why not.

How much do you do? Wondering if I’m an asshole parent 😅

My son is still too young to read on his own, but it never even occured to me that I would make him. He loves books, as do I. I would be very surprised if he would’t voluntarily read a lot, for fun, when he gets older. I think reading a lot to your kids when they’re young is key. Then reading is just going to come natural to them.

It’s not “making” him in the sense of forcing a strong reader to sit down and read, but more teaching him I guess. My problem was that school was doing a shitty job imo, so I had to teach him myself, otherwise he’d be behind.

Now he can read, but it’s still early stages of literacy, so I “make” him, meaning I sit next to him and correct/help him when needed. He likes listening to me and others read, so if he was stronger at reading, I think it would be natural
