A record-breaking heat dome scorched the United States in late June, setting or tying high-temperature records in more than 280 locations and placing more than 130 million people under extreme heat advisories and warnings. Cities across the East Coast and Midwest shattered all-time records, while dozens of others surpassed daily highs that had stood for more than a century. Simultaneously, the United Kingdom experienced its own heatwave, with scientists finding that global warming had made such an event up to 100 times more likely to occur. This United States' heat dome constituted a clear climate story, though national TV news largely failed to treat it as one. Climate change was rarely mentioned, despite the availability of robust attribution science showing that heat domes are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of Arctic warming and global emissions. Coverage also largely ignored the heat’s disproportionate toll on low-income families, outdoor workers, and medically vulnerable populations. And it offered no meaningful scrutiny of President Donald Trump’s ongoing rollbacks of climate and public health protections — specifically cutting funding and laying off staff for federally-funded hazardous heat programs, even as his administration's actions increase the public’s exposure to deadly heat.
It’s really frustrating. I live in South Louisiana. Even my most conservative relatives know climate change is real. We can fucking see it happening and if you don’t, your insurance company does. Even oil rig construction companies were getting offshore wind construction contracts because we have loads of expertise in offshore construction projects. We had the first “climate refugees” in the U.S. that had to relocate.
And people outside of New Orleans and Baton Rouge still voted for Trump. Connect the dots, motherfuckers.
I literally had some yuppie liberals once tell me as I was doing the stakeout for their house working for a Land Surveyor “well, we were going to get solar panels, but honestly who cares we did good for the world and we don’t have much time left anyways we aren’t going to be around for climate change!”, they said this to me after having a conversation about how I was a young person from the area excited about their future.
100% it was the most yuppie liberal thing ever in the sense that they acted completely morally superior to me (they were successful people with a career, I was a glorified day laborer) while spitting in my face like oblivious selfish children and somehow being completely unaware of it even when my face was covered in their vile hacked up nonsense.
“Fuck you I got mine” is the mantra of upper middle class US, and it lulls itself into a warm stupor by telling the lie over and over again that because they care about social issues it must mean the structures around them are as just and functioning despite the fact that people are dying in the streets everywhere, living and not living proof of a devastating lie.
Burn neoliberalism with fire, it is the only way we can survive.
Majority of people just do not give a shit about the issues around it. They just go “hur dur, Pandora’s Box, it’s already out the bag, market forces means it’s gonna stay”
Fucking just another instance of “capitalist realism” as if the rules of capitalist markets are immutable concepts of nature and not the conscious decisions of greedy, small-minded suits who don’t care about the people they know will suffer because of this.
I need the rest of the world to realize the US has quietly COMPLETELY given up on mitigating climate change since AI. I mean WORSE than given up.
Centrists and liberals NEVER talk about it politically anymore, climate change is just accepted as a random form of punishment from God/The Rich.
The US is a rogue state.

Fellow South Louisiana person on Lemmy!
As a European in The Netherlands we seem to have accepted AI as unstoppable “progress” it’s disgusting.
