Im a liberal-left woman who’s college educated (Im trying to become a teacher) whos a dual israeli/US citizen but atm feel alienated from both countries so wondering what in your guys views country would be a general fit for someone like me, maybe theres expats here who can help out
That depends what you wanna do and where you wanna live. If you’re not sure, look for working holiday kinds of programs and try them on for size. It also depends what languages you speak, or want to speak.
Will try that :)
Costa Rica. Lovely country with lovely people. They do not have a national military; this was a deliberate action by their government after civil unrest decades ago.
I don’t know Spanish but Id love to learn :)
It’s not a difficult language to learn, and you’ll be able to use it in a lot of places around the world. It’s definitely a language worth learning.
Will do :)
How about Canada?
Highly considering it
If you only speak English, perhaps The Netherlands? Lovely place, okay folk and overall cheap for the quality of life provided (compared to France and Belgium, for instance).
I speak English and Hebrew, unfortunately dont know any languages other than English that are useful around the world.
In most of Europe, including almost every big city, you can survive with English, and learn the local language after you arrive. It will be a hard blocker if you are looking for teaching position though.
One thing you don’t mention that would be important to figure out which countries would be a good fit for you is how important (or not) is to have access to a thriving Jewish community for you.
Interesting, didn’t know that. Well, yeah I want to have access to a thriving jewish community, do most European countries have big jewish communities? Im actually not sure
France, UK, and Germany have the biggest communities (100k plus). Of this France has the biggest (440k and 2.8% of the population), but at least my perception is that it’s also the unsafest country in western Europe for Jewish people right now - I would advice you reaching out to Jewish organisations in Europe to get an accurate picture on this point.
Hungary comes next, but I wouldn’t recommend the country to anyone that self defines as liberal or progressive.
I think Netherlands and Belgium also have relatively big communities in the big cities.
I think all European countries have synagogue, but some have pretty small communities.
Yeah good advice, though Ive heard antisemitism is rising in France and some other European countries, like how its rising here in the US. So Ill have to check into that concern as well
Try Vancouver, Canada.
We’re always looking for good teachers here and left leaning works very well with the culture here
Toronto, Canada is also lovely
I was just at a Gaza fundraiser show that had Israeli anti-genocide voices in it (in addition to Palestinian performers)
Toronto, Canada is also lovely
Housing though, oof.
Were the Israeli voices from any particular group? Im a member of Standing Together, which is one such group
Vancouver sounds awesome
Australia is always an option.
Australia does sound nice
I think so! Although I am a white guy so my experience may not be applicable.
Nice beaches, nice quality of life, but dont know how racist it is tbf
Neither do I tbh, I’m aware of the terrible shit Australia has/is done/doing to Aboriginals but I don’t think there is any systemic racism towards other groups. But again I am sheltered by both my crippling social anxiety and gender/skin colour, so you may need to ask someone with more personal experience.
I’m brown skinned since I’m Mizrahi, but I figure most Australians don’t even know what a Mizrahi is
Probably not. but sample size of one, I don’t think you would have a problem!
Nice!
Why would we help out Genociders ?? & you already have 2 strikes
Why would we help
Let me stop you right there… You do not make Lemmy a better place.
I don’t think I can say it any clearer than that. That hostile attitude is a detriment to the community. And please don’t say “we” when you really mean “I”, you don’t speak for everyone.
A country’s acts doesn’t guarantee it’s citizen’s views will be the same too.
This needs to be said, It seems obvious to me but not to many of the more unhinged lemmy users
You, uh, didn’t read OP’s post.
How about you repay some of the privilege given to you by both regimes theft of less worthy people’s resources and actually contribue to changing your homes for the better.
People used to be refugees from persecution, not from responsibility.
Anyway, you might be welcome in Hungary and probably India. Perth in Australia would work but you’d have to be white-passing to fit in with all the white South African post-apartheid refugees.
It sounds like you have a teaching degree which is a very country-specific qualification that is almost useless in other countries beyond maybe teaching English to American-occupied countries like Korea and Thailand.
Do you have any other skills with which to apply from abroad or do you expect to show up to a country and just be handed a visa and job? Which European countries did your grandparents colonise Palestine from? If you can get passports for those, you will at least have a right to be there.
I mean, she’s leaving, which would deprive them of her taxes, it’s the most she can do.
My goodness, you seem unwell.
Sorry that you’re apparently just now learning that your country’s whites-only immigration policies in living memory made it the most desired destination for the perpetrators of apartheid. Feel free to stop cosplaying a brit and just swear at me like an actual Australian though.
You certainly seem to assume the worst of everyone.
My parents don’t come from any European country, lol. I’m a Mizrahi Jew.
Well, that’s a real pity. Can’t see many of those countries welcoming you ‘back’ for some reason.
Yeah my grandparents are from Yemen, not exactly a place I could go to
Why not? Because you will face the consequences of genocide and can’t enjoy your life fully? You are still associating yourself with the most brutal disgusting fascist regime on this planet COMMITTING A GENOCIDE AND STARVING PEOPLE AS WE FUCKING SPEAK and see no problem with that?
As a European, you are NOT welcome here.
Jesus Christ dude… What is your fucking problem.
You’re talking as if they personally strangled babies, even though you have no idea about their actual views and beliefsHere, does this help understand? This is pure hasbara.
My problem is the starving kids in Gaza, but it looks like I’m alone here. I’m glad you sleep soundly at night.
She came here and announced her association with the zionist genocidal regime but I’m the asshole, got it.
People having a different point of view than you do on the best way to solve a complex and decades long conflict? The nerve!
The government that controls much of Yemen has the tagline “Curse be upon the Jews”, so I’m not interested in moving in a wartorn country that wants me dead.
Europe isn’t on the top of my places to move to because antisemitism is increasing there.
“Antisemitism” isn’t rising anywhere. The same people that have always been antisemetic are still antisemetic. What you’re seeing is anti-Israel sentiment, which is increasing because a country you have benefited from and therefore have responsibility to fix is committing an actual genocide and its soldiers - your soldiers, if you’re calling yourself Israeli, and quite likely your comrades unless the American part means you ran away to the US to avoid military service - are committing war crimes with smiles on Tiktok.
Shirking your responsibility because of the bad vibes you get from being murderer-adjacent will not make you friends anywhere.
This is not antisemitism, the people you associate with ARE KILLING CHILDREN IN THE MOST BRUTAL WAY POSSIBLE. THE BURNED THEM ALIVE, THEY SNIPE KIDS AFTER LURING THEM OUT IN THE STREETS, PUT DRUGS IN THE FLOUR, BOMB THEM RELENTLESSLY WHILE STARVING.
This is not antisemitism, this is human decency, the bare minimum. And since there are still people like yourself who can’t even acknowledge why there is a rise in israeli hate, i feel we should be even louder.
you are still regurgitating hasbara propaganda, i hope no country will welcome you. You deserve no welcome until you change your attitude.
Thank you, don’t worry your moral compass is alive and healthy.
