I thought it was alright that I’d hide from guests, in order to avoid embarrassing my family. I rarely have felt being mistreated, it just seemed like what I thought was “legitimate critique”.

It’s only much later I’d realize that maybe a child shouldn’t be responsible for parenting her parents.
