i graduated high school and im realizing that there is no clear path and many people are doing their own thing now… some people go to college, some are working, some are chudding around at home (me), some are going to trade school etc. im curous to see what jobs everybody has or if youre also jobiumfree (like me)
I work at UPS. It’s a good place for a career, if you have no other prospects and you can survive on part time hours for however long it takes to get enough seniority to get a full-time position.
It’s union work and the starting pay is good(at least outside of high cost of living areas), great health and dental benefits and a pension even as a part timer.
My hub has drivers making $130k at 26 years old(overtime), but we also have a few full time insiders making $46 an hour to throw boxes and shift trucks. A guy here recently retired at 50 with a maxed out pension.
The job security is the biggest selling point for me. I’ve heard stories about people who still have their jobs after some pretty egregious stuff. Had someone who punched a supervisor who kept his job because the union argued the violence was provoked by the supervisor screaming at him. People with tons of call outs and no call no shows, etc.
Definitely wouldn’t recommend it to someone who doesn’t like physical work or anyone who has skills or a degree that can do something else. But for me it’s great, I wish I started at UPS 10 years ago.
what’s their ADA compliance like? bunch of mail jobs i physically can’t do, including walking long distances…
I doubt they’d accommodate you. They work you insanely hard on your first 30 work days because you aren’t protected by the union yet. They expect you to be able walk miles on concrete floors and move 160 packages per hour.
All of the easier jobs go to people who have the most seniority.
