Most of the bad ones are bad on purpose like the meme distros people have mentioned. These are your Hannah Montana or My Little Pony Linux.
Other reasons they might be bad are they are ran by fascists, like Omarchy.
Mostly the rest aren’t actively bad in any special way, they’re just unnecessary. They’re all still Linux running similar packages, bootloaders, etc. The bones of everything are made by the specific software developers and the distros are largely just putting them together in different configurations.
I would argue something like 5 distros are truly necessary and the rest are just obnoxious fragmentation and duplicated effort disguised as ‘choice’. But they will work fine if you install them.
Anyone who tells you another popular distro is bad is likely to be talking very subjectively. Like how I think Debian sucks because their idea of ‘stability’ means having a Podman package that is 2 major versions behind the current one, lacking significant useful features. Others will say Debian is the perfect server OS or, God forbid, use it for games.
Omarchy is both technically bad, and run by fascists.
Ironically, Hannah Montana Linux was on the bleeding edge of Wayland adoption for a time. A state of the art distro in this regard.
I’d argue Redhat is actually quite bad for how big and influencial it is. Upgrading stuff to later releases is so painful. Support even for Redhats own stuff is like podman isn’t great.
For sure, the corporate side of it sucks. I just swapped my server from Debian to Alma because I wanted updated packages for stuff like Podman, SELinux, etc so it was the first example that came to mind. But there’s also the immutable/atomic vs. regular distros, etc.

I wouldn’t say the distro is bad, but I remember when I was on 4chan’s tech board (/g/ I wanna say? Idk it’s been about a decade since I’ve been on it at this point) the meme was to suggest newcomers install Gentoo because of how complicated and not beginner friendly it is.
Gentoo is legit. Requires a bit of maintenance to set up and run, but it has excellent documentation and competent maintainers. I’ve been using it on my desktop machine for 6 years now.
Yeah, not trashing Gentoo, I also had it installed at one point and it helped me learn more complex Linux stuff. I will argue though, that it is one of the worst distros possible for newcomers
Red Hat is kind of bad because of its commercial status, but it’s a moot point now, because nobody is using their enterprise distro on their personal computers.
Fedora is good to me. Plus some of the RHEL stuff that makes it in is nice.
I’d say ChromeOS probably, but I haven’t actually tried it, I just disremoved it as a concept.
NixOS
I use nix extensively and yeah I have to agree. The infrastructure alone is pure hubris and impossibly large. Not sustainable in the slightest. I’m looking into switching my stuff to guix, but they’re extreme purists which comes with its own set of issues.
You gotta figure out what you need and want to use your computer for, and then match that against the intent of the distro. Leadership can be bad, use of AI can be bad, or release timings and testing can be bad, but a distro isn’t itself inherently good or bad. People recommend good stuff. If they’re not recommending something, it’s either irrelevant, bad, or they don’t have an opinion on it. That’s way more work than me saying if you want a distro for gaming and low effort get Bazzite.
i’m trying to move from windows but i require a strong video editor, like premiere, and the only one i hear easily works is Da Vinci. Luckily i’m pretty familiar with da vinci, but the only “officially supported” distro for Da Vinci is Rocky Linux. Anyone ever used it? I have very very very minimal amounts of exposure to linux in the past.
I really like Davinci but it’s a pain to install on linux and there is limited codec support, even on the paid version. I use DJI cameras which record audio in AAC, which is just not supported. I could convert everything but that’s a lot of work.
I’ve been using Kdenlive and gotten used to it. Kden’s pretty good and you can run a local LLM for transcription, but Davinci is so smooth and fast once you get used to it
I shoot almost entirely on black magic cameras, heavily using BRAW, so I assumed linux would have braw support but probably fuckin not
Worth checking. Because you’d also think Blackmagic software would support Blackmagic hardware but things are never so simple
lol thats what i meant. long day yesterday. IIRC, even da vinci requires a plugin for braw, but i have no idea if that plugin is supported on the linux version of da vinci. gonna do some research today because i’m sick of windows and its bullshit
bazzite has an install script for it, or you can install rocky linux in a distrobox, or use https://github.com/zelikos/davincibox. You can use https://linux.toys/
Most of these install the free version, so you should know that it is limited on what codecs you can use. You might have to transcode the files to DNxHR or something to be able to work with them.
I’ve used DaVinci on Ubuntu just fine. It was a few years ago, but i wouldn’t select a distro based on their recommendation. I unbearably you might have a different approach if that’s your primary use case, though

What do you mean, “bad”?
Other than intentional meme distros, there are distros that have a bad reputation for various reasons. Manjaro maintains their own separate repository for software with the intention of making arch system upgrades less risky. But they’ve had many security and cert issues over the years that have broken the updates badly, ironically.
Ubuntu is a good distro from a functional angle, and has a ton on support you can get because it is so well known, but its parent company, Canonical is not great and suffers from all the most common problems that any corporate entity ends up suffering from.
The same can be said for a bunch of others. Lots of distros are perfectly fine, but have only one or two primary maintainers, so if they go off the deep end, or get sick, or otherwise leave the project, that distro likely will just die, and all its users will have to rapidly migrate to something else. That’s bad from an operational risk angle, but fine if you have your home partition backed up and are comfortable just migrating onto something else.
But also yeah, fuck Omarchy, that’s a weak ass distro.
Not really. Some distros are poorly suited to certain tasks and better at others. But I can’t think of any off the top of my head that are simply bad all-around, but also still reasonably popular.
