French Toast is actually French in origin - called pain perdu (“lost bread”).
What we would recognize as French Toast predates “Pain perdu” its earliest known origins are in the 4th century Roman cookbook Apicius. It was bread soaked in milk, honey and egg, fried, and drizzled with more honey.
Oh yeah, and I suspect there were versions even earlier than that we just don’t have records of - finding uses for stale bread would likely be as old as bread itself. I more meant the origin of what’s called “French toast” is indeed the French, not that they invented the concept.
