“It is literally just a bun with butter and a slice of cheese,” said Nina Bauer, a Danish food historian.
Why is the Danish capital not obsessed with puff pastry and jam?
If I knew that - I’d write a children’s book.

Ninja edit. Maybe I don’t need inspiration.“Professor Froggybottom - why is the Danish capital not obsessed with puff pastry and jam?”
“Well, Dakota, they love cheese sandwiches…”
“Don’t be silly you disgusting poors, you’re not actually struggling to get by, a slice of cheese on a piece of bread is practically a luxury!”
And it’s only ~$7!
Danes grab BMOs almost anytime — after run club, before dates, between meetings. They’re a filling snack and not all that expensive. At many of the top bakeries, they sell for about 45 Danish kroner (roughly $7), in line with other baked goods.

No we don’t. It’s mostly a breakfast food. Some kind of hotdog, döner kebab or McDonald’s slop is more likely on these occasions.
But the big dummy NYT reporter surely knows Danish culture in great detail like how to say “I’d like a hamburger.” in passable Danish.
NYT reporter who spent three days at a bougie hotel in the most touristy part of central Copenhagen: I am now an expert on Denmark and Danish culture!

passable Danish
There’s no such thing.
But isn’t it passable if it’s not stale?
Classic NYT propaganda move, really
The Danish capital is not obsessing over this. Some bougie bakeries have turned a simple snack sold at gas stations and bakeries for generations into an overpriced tourist trap.
Most people in Denmark thinks everything about it, including the “BMO” abbreviation, is fucking stupid.
My boss is obsessed with the bougie bakeries. (Not Denmark but I assume the situation is sort of similar across central European cities).
It’s sad how over the last decade or so a bunch of relatively affordable independent bakeries closed down and got replaced by bakeries where a loaf of bread or a sandwich costs almost as much as a full meal. And the bakery chains hiked up their prices too.
Idk I guess knowing which farm the heritage grain came from is sort of nice but really not worth it to me.
I concur. Everything about the “discussion” about the BMO is fucking stupid. Including the actual abbreviation. This just seems like a way for the weird bakeries to advertise themselves to a bunch of tourists that don’t know anything.
Also, I’ve tried a bunch of those bakeries at this point, and they all fucking suck. There’s no good reason why a pastry that tastes like lawn-clippings should cost 50 DKK.
I’m all for chasing perfection in silly things, but this is so clearly a manufactured gastrofad that it’s just annoying.
$7 for a cheese sandwich.
Young people have no work ethic. Plus - they love
avocado toastcheese sandwiches.
The Danes just now discovered Cheese on Bread???
Nah we just rebranded it to justify the 1000% markup in price
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Wait, my bad; some Scandinavian scalawag has put Limburger cheese on a piece of Wonderbread. False alarm.
Also, explaining a Danish “delicacy” to an American: imagine you have a Limburger…
Café au lait, a croissant, a cigarette and silence is the most civilised breakfast known to man. And I haven’t even smoked for like a decade.
CW: Meat
Although the best breakfast I’ve ever had was in a small rural hotel in Germany where we were seated under a stuffed boar’s head and served bread with about a billion different types of sausage and cold cuts.
CW: Meat, the British
And the full English, full Irish, fry up style breakfast sounds really awesome
I would love to have Asian and middle eastern breakfasts that are more substantial and have spices and vegetables and everything but I haven’t tried it yet and the logistics of me being an absolute zombie for the first hour and a half after getting up prevents me from trying it.
cafe au lait? what? espresso, a big glass of tapwater and a cigarette. that’s the proper breakfast.
can confirm, ive eaten a bowl of heavy cream for lunch once
