Summary

Donald Trump announced an executive order to expand migrant detention at Guantanamo Bay, authorizing the Pentagon and DHS to prepare facilities for up to 30,000 undocumented immigrants.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned the plan as “an act of brutality,” criticizing U.S. use of Guantanamo for detention.

Refugee advocates also decried the facility’s conditions.

The expansion follows Trump’s signing of the Laken Riley Act, which increases pre-trial detention for undocumented migrants accused of crimes.

What would it take for Cuba to break the lease agreement and tell the US to gtfo?

They don’t accept the payment that the U.S. provides. I don’t think they can force the U.S. off the island. I’m sure they would have by now if they could.

They’ve only cashed a single check for it iirc and that was by mistake. Castro famously would show off his stack of checks from the American government.
