Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•I wish the Steam Controller used AA batteriesEnglish
17·5 months agoWell, I completely understand your point. I also have rechargable AA batteries laying around, but I see it from this standpoint:
- The Steam controller includes this magnetic charging puck, which is a good way to make sure it’s always charged.
- It will mostly be used more or less stationary, sitting down in front of a PC. So even if the need arises to charge it this shouldn’t be a problem in many situations. This is vastly different than with the new VR controllers, because they will be moved around a lot and it’s not really realistic to charge them while using them.
- Many people still just use disposable batteries. Which is quite frankly just not good. So my best guess is that this connected with point two may be a leading factor for why they did it this way. I think a hybrid option (puck-rechargable battery pack or two AA’s) would have been awesome though.
- Valve’s repair policy was exceptional with the steam deck so I have reasons to believe that the battery for the steam controller will be available for a very reasonable cost. A very interesting question will be for how long.
All in all I understand your point, but it’s not a huge issue for me personally.

This not only shows if they are connected via a DERP (relay) but also retries to connect them directly a few times.
If that doesn’t work out it can sadly be quite hard figuring out why a DERP is used instead of a direct connection.
There is a project that can run some backgrounds, but is very experimental and IMHO not suited for running constantly as a desktop background. WPE is way too deep in specific windows features to be able to run on linux smoothly.
I second that. Ask 5 people, get 10 answers and the others are obviously wrong.
Also everyone should use Linux and everything can be done via GUI, but I obviously use terminal for everything so i can’t tell you how to fix it in GUI. Oh, sorry, you need to know how to use the terminal for that specific error you are having.

Technology@lemmy.world•Amazon is changing what is written in booksEnglish
3·1 year agoI am with you on this one. I do think it would be appropriate to have a disclaimer in the beginning, saying that these words used to have a different meaning, and that in the context of the time they were written they meant different things than today.
There is a German book where this is done that uses the N word for people of color.
This is the more appropriate way of handling this, because i am totally with you: we shouldn’t change what was written in books. If we start doing that, we destroy what authors have done, and in a sense we also edit history, because in this case we try to erase that these words were used in another context back in the days.

Proton @lemmy.world•Since Andy Yen's unfortunate comments, have any of you left Proton? And if so, what alternative did you choose?English
2·1 year agoThat’s good to know. My main gripe is that changing the email address for every service is so tiring. I’ve got >200 accounts in my password manager I’d need to change the mail address in, and from previous experience i know that the complicity of this can range from “just go to the settings” over “message the moderators” to “you just can’t”.
It’s shocking how complicated it can be.

Proton @lemmy.world•Since Andy Yen's unfortunate comments, have any of you left Proton? And if so, what alternative did you choose?English
73·1 year agoNo. Because changing email providers is a royal pain in the ass. Changed from Google to Ctemplar and from that to proton a year later after ctemplar went down.
I am not going to use smaller email providers because of that experience, and proton still seems to be the best of both worlds.
I absolutely hate that i am supporting a CEO like that with my money but I’m not in the mood to migrate anytime soon. Took me more than a whole weekend last time.
Yeah, I have:
27" 1440p in the middle
24" 1080p to the right
21" 1080p on the upper left
22" 1050p 16:10 on the lower leftAll from different manufacturers, two of them bought broken and resurrected. I call it the “chaotic evil necromancer setup”. None of them in portrait though.
