Just get an oldish SFF or USFF office computer cheap somewhere. It’s generally much cheaper and allows for upgrades if ram/ssd prices ever come down. Also somewhat new Intel CPUs are quite good for transcoding.

Does it come with KDE preinstalled or is that just for the screenshot?

I’d love to give it a try on my secondary laptop as it sounds just great, but I really can’t stand KDE.

I can understand your stance here, but for me living in the EU both the current memory cartel and CXMT are foreign entities. And while one has proven themselves to be “evil” the other has not. So in a way that gives me a glimpse of hope.

I really hope they start dominating the field in the coming years.

Camera was working sometimes and when it did it had a strong green hue. Calls were working well, but the secondary microphone for noise cancellation was not used so the sound on the other side was rather bad.

As I’ve said, it a bit rough but getting very close to useable for me at least.

A bit rough around the edges in the ui/ux department. Otherwise if you don’t expect much more than Firefox and calls its certainly usable for a daily.

Definitely worth a try on a cheap phone imo.

I recently bought an OnePlus 6T in almost pristine condition for about £40. I got it mostly for playing around with postmarketOS but it handles lineage perfectly fine. CPU is fairly snappy both under lineage and postmarket and for that price you can’t buy just the OLED display, let alone anything else.

Switched my parents to mint probably 10 years ago and I haven’t heard any complaints, just had to remind them to update every so often and had to upgrade once EOL came. It has been the same with my very non technical girlfriend that switched to mint probably a year ago.

If you make sure they have supported hardware (and most of it is supported these days) my bet is you won’t have to support them at all.

Why on earth would anyone willfully install ChromeOS? I haven’t followed recent developments but I’ve always thought of it as very limiting, not to mention just as bad in terms of privacy as a Windows install.
