Came here to recommend spelling bee as well, it’s really great. I’ve binged the Australian version this week and still have NZ to go. BBC3 broadcasting the Australian version has me optimistic for a UK edition in the future.

Got AC for the first time this year but I can’t get the window kit to fit. On the plus side, our new house is better insulated and we moved to a quieter area so we can have the bedroom window open a bit at night without being disturbed by as many drunk people. It’s 22°C in the bedroom at the minute which isn’t great but not so bad that the AC needs running, I’ll have to figure it out for the summer months though.
The Firefox AI controls got pushed out with the latest update, everything’s on by default but can be disabled in the settings
Yep, came with the AI update yesterday for me on Fennec. Wish they would leave Fennec as the no-bullshit version as it should be.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•I really don't understand how people have 200+ guests at their weddings.
4·23 days agoWe had less than 25 people at ours, city hall wedding with a late lunch afterwards and everyone home by 6pm. Spent the money we saved on buying a house instead, and the small number of people kept the day feeling really chill. We had a long engagement and kept putting it off because we were dreading having an expensive ceremony with everyone we’ve ever met in attendance…and then one day we just realised we can do whatever we want.

Games@lemmy.world•Civilization VII "Test of Time" update lands May 19, finally letting you play entirely as one civEnglish
61·1 month agoI still don’t want to touch it unless they remove Denuvo and the forced 2K launcher. Feels like with each entry it becomes less about the game and more about extracting as much money as they can through DLC while ramping up the anti-features.
There’s a pretty good video on the whole sixpenceeee situation here, for anyone that likes mini YouTube documentaries about tumblr drama

Technology@lemmy.world•Gen Z Sabotaging AI at Work So It Won't Take Their JobEnglish
23·2 months agoCan’t sabotage what’s already broken. The rare time I’ve been asked to use it for a piece of work, the output is so shit and full of errors that it would be easier to have done it by hand as a human.

161·2 months agoUnfortunately it’s very real. The author Naomi Klein has a great book about Naomi Wolf called Doppelganger, based on the fact that people keep getting the two of them confused. Her descent into the right-wing conspiracy world is quite a thing.
Quite funny to see someone call Belfast calm and peaceful though. I’m in it quite regularly and usually just want to get out as soon as I can.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•The contents of a jar of Nutella
2·2 months agoSame in Europe in the late 00s/early 10s anyway - the ads here boasted about it being a good source of slow-release energy to keep you going til lunch
I think it’s just sold on privately here unfortunately, the council collects food and garden waste but doesn’t allow residents to collect the end product. I’m in Ireland but I believe the same advice applies here, it’s just we moved so late in the winter that autumn sowing wasn’t a possibility. But yes I’m trying to be patient and remember this isn’t a temporary rental, I’m here for the long haul and it doesn’t need to look perfect right away.
Nice! I’ve had no luck germinating my native seeds yet but it is only early Spring and the last frost here isn’t for another few weeks, but there is at least some campanula and primrose out the front that early bumblebees have been feeding on. We bought this house off an ex-landlord so the garden hasn’t been looked after at all - it’s taken me ages finding and digging up all the plastic plants, and there’s glitter in the soil from cheap garden decor that should never have been sold in the first place. Next big project is to build this greenhouse since my home office is so filled up with seed starters I can no longer work in there, then by the summer I should have some usable compost to replenish the plastic contaminated border.
At the minute, composting. It’s my first Spring having a house with a garden so I can finally do all the eco-friendly gardening projects I could never do while living in a landlord’s mouldy house. So watching garden and food waste slowly decay is surely the most mundane, but exciting for me, although it’s nice to have a few projects on the go like growing a wildflower patch, having a bed of pollinator-friendly herbs, and planting clover among the grass so it isn’t a monocultural suburban hell
Ironfox still has it the old way, their repository should be an option in droidify/f-droid. The redesign is horrible

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What’s a cheap purchase that’s completely changed your life?
21·4 months agoA garlic press. I avoided them for years because of a mixture of guidance saying it’s just as easy to chop it or it tastes worse from a press. I don’t have the tastebuds to notice it being any worse and it’s certainly a lot easier than chopping since you don’t even have to peel it.

Games@sh.itjust.works•What have been your top 3 games played so far during this break?English
3·5 months agoGot expedition 33 running on the steam deck (with some amount of tweaking to make it run smooth - valve should not be marking that game as verified) and it has absorbed every moment of free time I have. Fully understand the hype now. Apart from that, Outer Wilds had been sitting in my library since the summer sale untouched and I’ve finally gotten into it, and Dispatch was really fun and beautifully animated.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you buy real Christmas trees or put up artificial ones?English
4·6 months agoI bought an artificial one second-hand which felt like the most sustainable option - not cutting a tree down every year and not paying for virgin plastic either. Charity shops here are usually filled with pretty nice ones since a lot of people seem to replace their plastic trees far more frequently than they should.
I love mine. It’s pretty unobtrusive but there’s a ton of open-source applications available on the store. Probably the most similar to the original Pebble (besides the new pebbles of course) right down to the MIP display. Tried a pinetime but it’s very limited by comparison and an IPS screen on a smartwatch is a terrible idea.

Fediverse@lemmy.world•I've recently turned into a blocker.English
6·8 months agoI’ve gotten more aggressive with blocks lately. Feels like there’s been a lot more arguing and drama on here lately than usual, and I haven’t been on as much because of it. Blocking at least drowns a lot of that out.

The hosts on Sky News were discussing their “legitimate concerns” about immigration while a live stream of minorities being burnt out of their homes played in the background which was one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen. Like there was a mum and toddler being rescued from a burning building by the fire brigade and these fucks just want to see how justifiable they can make all of this. Tonight has been one of the most sickening bouts of rioting in the city since the peace process began (like it’s this or the time they threw piss and other objects at eight year old school girls just for being Catholic) but it happens every summer, the target of hatred has just moved from Catholics to immigrants.
