Linux@programming.dev•GNU/Linux or Just Linux? Between Purism and Everyday Usage
102·5 days agoThere is no operating system with either name. The operating systems are called Debian, Arch, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc.
We need a name to collectively refer to them. If we say “Linux” because they share the Linux kernel, ok, but so does eg. Android.
What better name is there to refer to the ones in the above list, but not Android, than “GNU/Linux”?

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Opinions are like teeth; we should have two sets of them
3·8 days agoI think most people form most of their worldview around the age of 12 to 14 years. I know I did, that is when I first learned about most of the issues I am still most passionate about nowadays. Anything I learned about earlier or later, I am more likely to change my mind about.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Opinions are like teeth; we should have two sets of them
10·8 days agoIf you do not occasionally change your views on things even later in life based on new information, then you’re not doing very much thinking. Your thought is incomplete, we should have more than two sets of opinions.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•People espousing that unions don't work should have a look at police unions.
61·8 days agoAFAICT not really true for Austria (where I live), we get 5 weeks of vacation, yet I don’t hear very much about unions and am not myself a member of one

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•We need libraries, but instead of books, you borrow musical instruments.
4·8 days agoCouldn’t you just go to a store that sells musical instruments and try them out there? I don’t know enough about musical instruments to know the answer, but I am a hobbyist photographer and we can certainly do that with cameras.

Fediverse@lemmy.ml•Is there any Fediverse project aimed at creating a safe space for kids to interact within?
8·10 days agoWhat do you expect that to do, on a technical level?
Because if all you want to do is the societal result, you can use any existing backend and configure it to disable federation except with other servers with the same goal. Unclear what you are trying to achieve.

That can move photos into directories according to their EXIF date, which should already help you a lot.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Strawberry should be spelled with an H
3·11 days agoDo you have this problem only with “strawberry” or also with “straw” alone? What about other words beginning with str-, like street or straight?
My first language doesn’t have syllable-initial st-, yet pronouncing any of these words is no problem for me at all in English.

18·12 days agoAn ISO file is just binary data representing the data on an optical disk.
So it makes sense that VLC can in principle open ISO files, they could be audio CDs or movie DVDs. I suppose what you see here is the result of it doing its best to “show” a DVD containing something entirely different.

Not disagreeing with anything you wrote, but TBF that highway is planned as a tunnel below the national park. Still, more space for cars will cause an increase in traffic. Only way I could support this if they instead demolished part of the A23, maybe build a railway or tram track in its place, hey can’t a man dream… 😁😎
