Hello guys, I’m curious about this meme, is there some literature where I can find someguides to test this? Thanks.
You wouldn’t pay for 4k Netflix and then download a Chromebook recovery image in order to extract the aarch64 widevine com blobs and then patch in support for 16k pages and then apply miscellaneous glibc compat workarounds and then spoof your useragent, and install a browser extension to unlock HD resolutions, to legally watch media in only 1080p
At the moment your service becomes even marginally more difficult than piracy, yo ho yo ho. What am I paying you for?
Every single “service” out there is more difficult than Stremio. Exception might be non-english content
In concept. Every single time I’ve tried to use it I’ve had issues. The movies stop constantly, files become unreachable for some indiscernible reason preventing me from continuing from the same source, the app bugs out like crazy, some things aren’t all that easy to find, the quality isn’t always great or there’s weird stuff like embedded subtitles or watermarks.
I genuinely thought it was just me but yeah this has always been the case for me. Neat concept but I think that living in the middle of nowhere with crappy internet makes it impossible to use for me.
So I just install the app, sign up, and I can start watching whatever?
you will need to install the torrentio addon and have a vpn. a debrid service isn’t needed
You’ll need to install the torrentio add-on.
You should use a VPN, but it will work without one.
You can use a debrid provider and remove the other stremio addons you don’t use. I’ve never bothered, and to be honest I don’t even really understand what debrid is.
Certainly sounds more difficult than Netflix.
Marginally maybe? Installing an add-on in torrentio doesn’t take more than a second, but it isn’t a process most people are already familiar with, like entering credit card details to open an account.
You’ll likely also need to pay for a Debrid service. It’s basically a download caching server, so if one user downloads a file, it’s available to everyone.
With Stremio, that means that popular media will already have a zillion options pre-cached. If you want more niche stuff, then you can do the extra step to get your Debrid service to download it for you (assuming there’s a public teacher that has it with seeders.)
It should also work for those download/file sharing sites, but I haven’t bothered to figure it out yet.
Well that certainly sounds more difficult than any streaming service I’ve ever used.
This is where I wind up every time I ask.
Eh, it’s different. I like that I can choose individual streams for different quality. I watch at 720p on my old TV with crappy WiFi, or 4K on my desktop. Anything mainstream enough to be on a streaming platform will already be loaded, it’s just obscure stuff you might need to add yourself, which you’d never get on Netflix anyway.
We usually watch shows in Stremio even if they’re on Netflix.
Okay, but I can pretty much guarantee my mom couldn’t figure out how to set that up.
But she can get Disney+ going no problem.
Yeah, fair. The setup is a bit technical for sure. You can set it up to default to different settings, though, so it would probably work well if the defaults are set correctly.
Like, my crappy old laptop can only handle H264s, not H265, but you can select video codec as a default. At least, I’m pretty sure you can.
My kids can manage it, and they’re only 6 & 8.
except Ukrainian for some reason. I’ve had a lot of issues with english, polish and russian content, but Cloudstream3 with cloudstreak-extensions-uk never ever stopped working and has all of the content i care for, with high quality dubs from either the source or local tv channels (both sound as good as the og English va)
I am not as worried about DMCA as the author is lol
Here’s the blog post about it; https://www.da.vidbuchanan.co.uk/blog/netflix-on-asahi.html
I enjoyed reading this a lot. thanks for sharing
Dear, OP
Kindly go fuck thine self.
Yours truly, This dyslexic idiot.
You might have already figured it out, but it says
You wouldn’t pay for 4k Netflix and then download a Chromebook recovery image in order to extract the aarch64 widevine com blobs and then patch in support for 16k pages and then apply miscellaneous glibc compat workarounds and then spoof your useragent, and install a browser extension to unlock HD resolutions, to legally watch media in only 1080p
Also I don’t think OP made the meme, I think they’re just wanting to know more (as am I). Like, what’s the drama? Why’d someone make the meme? It implies Netflix only lets you watch things in 1080p on a PC if you apply a bunch of workarounds (presumably to make the site think you’re a TV or something).
They limit the resolution on linux and even getting 1080p as a paying customer is very hard.
They also limit it on other platforms, if you use anything other than
Internet ExplorerEdge. Since Microsofts browser is the only one to include the Silverlight DRM plugin.Silverlight DRM plugin
Wtf, hadn’t heard of that
It’s a blog post on how to get Netflix and Spotify to work on Asahi Linux, the project to run Linux on new “M” chipsets 64bits Arm apple computers. Their solution (and widevine hack) is now integrated in the Fedora Linux Asahi Remix project’ default distro. You still have to do the user agent mod tho.
Thanks I will check it out!
It all works quite smoothly ; the install process is a breeze of a single .sh script to run directly from macos. The amount of software available for Arm64 is surprising, tho gamers will be disappointed there’s no Vulkan / Steam available yet.
That “Default” install is really just Fedora, shipped with KDE for it’s superior handling of fractional scaling. There’s the dnf package manager, flatpaks, the works.
I’m 80~90% of the time on the Asahi side of things on my device. Showstoppers today are sleep battery drain (50% a day) and pure “ooomph” - performance of an M2Pro chip is more akin to a 12th gen i7 than the same chip under macos. Rendering in kdenlive or blender is noticeably slower on Asahi. But it’s a huge reverse-engineering undertaking, and it will be getting better.
I understood more than half of that. I feel so smart.
Thank you for sharing this information.
You are correct I didn’t make the meme, I’m looking for the technical background .
I’m really glad to see that text transcriptions of image posts are much more common here than on other sites, but clearly still not common enough.
Images of text, and the people that post them, have their own circle of hell waiting for them.
In this case the image is a riff on a video, so I’ll let it slide, but I don’t know why OP didn’t just submit the source post instead of just this image from it.
I’m not dyslexic and I can hardly read it too.
have you made sure that you’re not a robot?
How many fingers am I holding up? If your answer is 6 or more, I have bad news for you and your data set.
I only have four fingers and a thumb but I have three penises and two vaginas and six titties.
Five cats in a trenchcoat with a severed hand.
Check.
Your powers of deduction are sherlockian and uncanny
Hey Sabee363, I didn’t make the meme. I’m diging into this technologies because im paying for my grandma and last night I started remembering this topic, I’mhighly addictive to low level technology and I like to play with systems.
Partner, sorry if I don’t transcribed. Have a nice day/evening/night.

Your totally fine, I was mostly poking fun at how much of a nightmare things like this can be to read. I was probably a bit heavy handed with my comment though, sorry. Might’ve also been stoned and forgot to finish what I was trying to say, lol.
No problem my friend, I will count on this for the next time. Thanks for making me notice.
I’m pretty sure the point of the meme is to be visual vomit just to demonstrate how fucking elaborate and confusing it is
Turns out I don’t even care about all that content that much.
Absolutely. My wife flew to her parent place with our toddler and I dont have any idea on what to watch.
All I’m watching is nursery rhymes since they’re catchy as all hell.
The image is from this Asahi Linux blog post btw
I would wear this on a T-shirt.
That was a wild ride!
Dear lord wtf, is there no dark mode?!
It’s going to be way easier just to torrent the files. Also if netflix notices your account is suddenly going through ten times the data they may deactivate it.
But the author is actually using less data than expected, because he’s paying for 4K, but only able to watch up to 1080p
This level of effort is probably geared more towards those who create the torrents, not those who consume them.
heroes. we should support them more.
Hi. No it isn’t. Things are usually ripped by recording the screen.
Which is accomplished by doing the described steps
Nope, those steps are the steps needed to legally watch Netflix on Asahi Linux on an Apple Silicon device, because Google has not officially released the widevine library for that platform
Maybe can we emulate this apple silicon processor? I will give it a try.
No the fuck it isn’t.
YOU CAN BREAK HDCP BY USING AN HDMI SPLITTER.
I removed my downvote after realizing you’re actually right, in a sense. In scene terms, a “webrip” can be a screen recording, whereas a “web-dl” by definition isn’t. By these definitions,
Things are usually ripped by recording the screen
could likely be true, even moreso if you count “recording hdmi stream after breaking hdcp” as a screen recording.
Most rips are webrips. At least the first ones. Then once the DVDs/BluRays come out they’re usually remuxes of those. Very few organizations know how to breake the web DRM thing, and it takes a while.
Rips are rips, with a degradation in quality compared to the captured source. WEB-DLs are the source itself (of a chosen resolution), with no degradation.
Yeah that’s a lot of work. That’s why I just sail the high seas and put stuff on Plex.
Well that was a ride.
Too much effort, sailing the high seas is so much easier
I can’t believe people even bother with 1080P let alone 4K. Is there unlimtied bandwidth where you all live?
In my part of the world anything above 480p is just asking for a bad time, with no actual improvement on your ability to enjoy the story.
Hmm I can’t decide if this is a joke or if I’m just very privileged in the internet department
Most people in developed countries have internet that can support HD resolutions, yes. Mine even does, and our building’s wiring is original to the 50s.
In Canada high speed is over 1 mbps
That speed isn’t universal yet
Respectfully, I’d consider large parts of Canada to be undeveloped. I’m not trying to throw shade or anything, there’s just a lot of Canada to develop.
The same is true to a lesser degree in the US and most other very large nations.
You are right it’s not developed and the governments are even taking money away from the undeveloped areas to feed the developed ones because it’s mainly minorities in those areas
Edit: because of the mod deleting, I am still unsure of why recognizing systemic racism is racist

It’s not, but I didn’t want the comment thread devolving into a heated discussion on racism just because @scoobford@lemmy.zip jumped to entirely the wrong conclusion about your post.
Thank you for clarifying

I’m referring to two bits of copper wire in a sleeve of (probably rubber) insulation, commonly used for landlines back in the day. If you don’t call it that, maybe it’s a regional thing.
Oh, and there’s 8 billion people on this planet. They all live in the “real world”. Your experiences are not somehow more valid because you happen to live on one particular patch of dirt.
city people suck though.
I agree and I live in Germany and have good internet. Story beats resolution any time
Feel you m8, where i live we are stuck for the most part with 10Mbit/s at most, an that’s the high end stuff.

I listen to 128kbs regularly you might just be an audiophile 😭 not that there’s anything wrong with that
Oh no, apologies, I didn’t mean to cause emotional damage! I realized way too late that the thread was discussing streaming while I was going off in download for archiving, so I deleted the whole thing. I’m confused how it still ended up on your screen!
Anyhow, i guess it depends on your system, but… you might have a point, I might be picky. It just sounds so obvious to me, but that’s my ears and doesn’t mean anything about your ears. You do you, man 😅
Lemmy deletion just doesn’t work very well. I can see it too even though I didn’t have the post cached. I wonder if different instances cache whole other instances’ posts and comments…

It depends what you are watching it on I suppose. If you’re streaming content on a phone, then 480p is probably acceptable to most people. But if your connection can support a higher resolution without buffering issues, then why wouldn’t you? Especially if you’re watching something on a TV or large monitor, it’ll look terrible in 480p.
Edit: I’m assuming when I said “why wouldn’t you?” that you have unlimited data. Obviously if you have a data cap then that’s a different story.
You know there is only so much bandwidth right? I get so tired of city people and there f’d up realityies.
Don’t know why you think you know where I live. And you seem to have completely missed the disclaimer where I said “Obviously if you have a data cap then that’s a different story.”
And just FYI, for areas with a decent internet network, whether in the city or not, your data use doesn’t impact your neighbors’ bandwidth in any meaningful way, assuming your ISP isn’t massively over-subscribed. I mean all ISPs are oversubscribed to some extent, but then most people aren’t download 24/7, so they typically size the ‘pipe’ to accommodate peak combined usage.
I’m perfectly well aware that if your local ISP’s network is dogshit then this might be more of an issue. That’s why they typically have data caps in those areas to discourage bandwidth usage. If you don’t have a bandwidth cap then it’s really the responsibility of your ISP to provide enough bandwidth for everyone to enjoy. You want to go around ranting at people for watching HD movies, go right ahead, see what happens. Try ranting at your ISP - it might be more effective.
No data cap, and its not even the download speed, though of course that sucks too unless you live in a city, even just wi-fi streaming inside home is shitty with 1080P.
Gigabit internet with no cap so yes. Also I’m used to 1080p so anything lower feels bad tbh
