My point was to do with one reason cup sizes in the U.S. are larger: Americans typically use more ice than people in other countries. It’s not there because it’s water, it’s there to keep the drink cold.
Ice is water in solid form, when it melts it becomes water again. Ice displaces its own volume in water. If you have 30 fl oz of water and 10 fl oz of ice, and you leave it there for a while, you will have 40 fl oz of water.
This is only true for a very limited amount of ice. Once ice cubes are fully submerged (and held under by more ice), the displacement rules change because ice is actually less dense than water, which is intuitive, because the ice floats.
