Adding to what others have said: It’s part of the tree inventory. It may be used by maintenance/physical plant, but can also be part of an arboretum status for the campus with a publicly facing GIS map and attributes.

I think that’s what note they’re in. 440 is A, so that tree is tuned to A.

Tree tag. I’m not a tree tree doctor, but that kinda looks like an ash. Around where I live too ash trees are commonly tagged and checked up on to monitor invasive emerald ash borer populations

they do it at our school to identify maintain the tree. unfortunately they are putting it on the invasive, fire-prone eucalyptus blue gums at our university, plus also bottle brush too.

Pretty sure they’re id tags for trees. Basically a way for the maintenance people to track and log data for each tree.

please hang name tags below each of these, so the trees get dignified names (such as “shady mcshade oak”) instead of just numbers

        I want to name one!

        “Mentos: The Fresh Air Maker”

Kinda catchy, might need a marketing campaign, hmmm

You can’t name one, but in Melborne, Austrailia, you can email one.

          http://melbourneurbanforestvisual.com.au/#mapexplore

They have mapped many of their trees and given each one an email address. According to their webpage it was really so that when a tree was damaged or diseased someone could simply “email the tree” and someone would be able to put the issue into the “lets get this issue fixed” queue.

But what happened was that folks were emailing the trees for non-repair type of issues and were general emails like the tree was living person, like an ENT from Lord of the Rings.

I was at the beginning “This is friggin awesome! Exactly what tech is supposed to be about”

Then the bomb dropped, man people are weird.

Case in point I was part of one of the first streaming companies online (2000). We would stream wrestling as our biggest draw until we got major sports onboard.

We had an email link for “support” for tech support.

A few days before the wrestling events we would get FLOODED with support emails… Nope not for why they can’t get the test stream to work. But to support their favorite wrestler. It was insane the shit these people would write.

“Email Support”. Yeah, I can kind of see someone wanting to support their favorite wrestler, and I bet people got really insane with their messages. Wrestling has some pretty interesting fans.

Perhaps if we named more tree’s people would take better care of them.

Naming trees would definitely work. Case in point my buddy owns a big cattle farm. When his kids got older they named some of the calf’s. He warned them thats not a good idea. Kids are kids and they ignored him.

Now he’s not a beef or dairy farmer. He’s a breeder, he has a stable of high quality cows and inseminates them for the calf’s.

So his kids name a bunch of the calf’s, bottle raise them w/ mom cows help then they goto auction. They were devastated that “Daisy” and “Jemirqui” where gone over a weekend.

They never named another cow after that, they learned it was a business the hard way. But humanizing them did change the dynamic. Like with naming tree’s…

My wife names our trees and organizes their planting location on a regular basis because moving plants is good. She otherwise has absolutely no interest. Fruit trees? Yeah those go in the back under the shade. Right where the sun can go F itself. I’m quietly screaming for help.

You are experiencing a severe form of spousal abuse and tree abuse. Fruit trees no it the sun, moved around? I never took any of my plants for a walk like a puppy…

I feel for you my friend, I really do.

She’s a little ADHD bipolar and autistic but without any clear indication. So I get to go around the house fixing things like Phillips screws that look like X and not correctly installed like +. I had to replace all our switch and outlets with unbreakable ones so I could tighten the screws and then get them to be + oriented but without cracking the plates.

My university also used these to keep track of pest treatment (ground wasps). They got pretty pissed when people started removing the tags because “they hurt the trees.”

Exactly. Or our small town does the same. Each time a tree has to be cut, they plant a new one and add the old number. So the number of trees only ever goes up, never down.

The botanists in the biology dept have the answers you seek. I suspect there is a map of your campus trees, and this one is on it. It’s common for universities to have an arboretum on campus. Find the map and look for trees you’ve never seen before! I bet you can find a ginkgo or a cork tree.
