  • Take block of firm tofu. Crumble it in your fists as a form of sloppy stress relief. Fry the crumbled tofu with whatever flavours you like on tacos. Tofu tacos.

Miso soup + silken tofu cubes cooked right in the soup.

Take silken tofu. Add cocoa powder. Blend until smooth. Put in freezer to set. Chocolate mousse. Really silken tofu can be whipped smooth into any number of mousse/“ice cream” type deserts. Also good base for making a nice thick pudding.

  • Your hyped-up aggressive insults of everyone that disagrees with you and your inability to recognize that people are explaining a different worldview than yours and that isn’t inherently evil or ignorant or deserving of scorn is what’s racist.

You’re refusing to actually read the content of the messages you’re replying to and making up a person to argue with in your own head.

It is a fucking fact from my lived experience that doctors in the West treat one thing. You go to an office and you are allowed to bring up one problem. Bodies don’t fucking work like that. How can you know which things are connected? How could the doctor actually diagnose what’s wrong and provide a real, lasting treatment if they are only getting disconnected, disjointed snapshots of issues you face. If you tell a doctor you have a weird fucking pain in your shoulder but you can’t also tell them about the sores on your shins because that’s two things then no fucking wonder it takes ten years to get a fucking MS diagnosis.

Holistic is not a dirty word, whatever chuddy ass, chauvinistic, superiority-driven complex you have makes you declare that with utmost confidence that everyone who disagrees is inferior to your clearly brilliant intellect. Learn to engage with what people actually are saying, and learn to come into conversations respectfully even when you disagree, or fucking leave me alone forever, because your arrogance disgusts me.

  • TCM is a science in China, though. It is put through the same clinical trials as laboratory pharmaceuticals. It is researched with the same scientific method. China just isn’t dismissive of generations of anecdotal evidence and the eradication of Indigenous medicinal knowledge like colonial medicine is.

Anecdotal evidence, I may add, is not a negative thing for doctors to consider. For instance, there is very little actual clinical research on trans hormone therapies. Especially with regards to secondary or tertiary treatments, like progesterone. Anecdotal evidence of the effectiveness of progesterone in breast development is the primary reason affirming doctors are willing to prescribe it, despite the lack of clinical evidence.

The answer isn’t to denigrate treatments and medications that haven’t been thoroughly studied, but to increase the amount of study.

  • The list of problems that need to be resolved before this

Like climate catastrophe? Hmm, good thing animal agriculture isn’t related to that.

Or maybe imperialism? The imposition of industrialized animal agriculture for export forced on the Global South by the imperial core can’t be important to that obviously.

The next inevitable pandemic? Animal agriculture definitely doesn’t play a part in the spread of infectious disease and increase the chances developing the next major virus to plague us.

Alienation of humans from nature and from each other? Nahh, no way that systems of violence and exploitation can be interlinked, they’re just animals after all, and that has no bearing on how we ignore the treatment of people or create hierarchies of care where those deemed subhuman can be entered into the beast category. No sirree, no history of colonialism treating people as animals.

  • I’ll go farther and provide the concrete example of Burkina Faso. Land redistribution, anti-imperialism, state programming, internationalism: Burkina Faso has, currently, an incredibly leftward direction that shames anything the average settler society is attempting.

They also banned queer people recently.

Is that awful? You bet it is.

Is it correct to say that if someone from Burkina Faso come to the US, got a seat on council, and banned pride flags, that it would be because they “come from very conservative…backgrounds?” Conservative compared to whom? The predominantly white settler settler society in the US that is passing the bulk of these anti-queer laws and creating a society that can more promptly and safely adopt anti-queer legislation? The settler society that spends literally a trillion dollars to undermine left movements, like Burkina Faso, worldwide in order to exploit them? That has a militarized and unaccountable police force constantly surveilling any potential movement to replicate even a fraction of the left policies of Burkina Faso in the US?

  • Immigrants overwhelming come from very conservative, religious backgrounds. They’re very right-wing except for the issue of immigration.

This is an absolutely wild claim to make, unless your definition of right wing extends solely to the political context of specifically America and you apply it to the world at large. Which is, of course, a very American thing to do.

White liberal American ideas of what constitutes right and left wing can’t just be applied on other political and cultural contexts. A white liberal American has no trouble calling a predominantly Muslim country right wing, because they consider US liberal values to be the sole direction of left wing. However that same Muslim country may have enshrined cultural laws and norms regarding community, hospitality, state ownership, and resistance to exploitation both local and foreign. All things that are more left wing than the average US citizen.

Meanwhile, because they may have anti-queer legislation (which is world-historically an artefact of Christian colonial imposition and continues to be propped up in many locations specifically in response to entirely understandable anti-Western sentiment), or often not even legislation, just cultural norms that don’t align with Western queer acceptance (which is already tenuous, rarely enshrined in law, and frequently having its small gains eroded), it suddenly invalidates all the other ways in which these communities are radically more left wing than most settlers.

  • It is factually true that after the early success of the Bolsheviks, the USSR under Stalin re-criminalized homosexuality, re-criminalized abortion, promoted traditional family reproduction (including awarding medals to women who bore seven or more children), and sought to define the new Soviet man and the new Soviet woman along lines that were a return to more traditional understandings of the family, as opposed to early Bolshevik desires to disestablish the bourgeois arrangement of the family unit.

The article mentions the economic crisis, and it is also a historical fact that the control of reproductive labour and sexual reproduction, and the assignment of rigid gender roles and family dynamics, go hand in hand with crises of capital. When there is economic downturn, there has been, historically, rises in traditional sentiment regarding gender, increases in restrictive policies regarding the autonomy of women’s bodies, and a reduction in access to contraceptives and abortives. This is a mechanism to ensure the supply of labour, and can be seen in modern-day upsurges in abortion restriction, revocation of contraceptive education, and a renewal of attacks on gender and sexual deviance.

Whether this was a necessary turn, or an egregious backslide, will depend on the interpreter’s understanding of the oppression of women, the dangers of capitalist reassertion over the USSR, and the ultimate failure of the USSR as a polity.

  • Yes, important documents ready to go. Food. Water. First aid kit, and if possible not just laceration supplies, but a burn kit. Sewing kit, lighters, a good knife (you never know when you need to cut something in an emergency, like if someone is tangled in something). Rubbing alcohol and disinfectant. Flashlight. Batteries. A backup battery for a phone could be very helpful. You can get hand-crank radios (and hand-crank flashlights) in case of power failure.

Don’t underestimate the importance of keeping floss, toothbrush, and toothpaste in an emergency. Same with certain tablets (vitamin C and D) if you are not able to get outside much or get fresh food. You don’t want infections at a time of high stress. Honey and salt can be helpful as antibacterials in a pinch.
