Your question had me wondering if more than half of people alive now were also alive when tv stations signed off (instead of playing infomercials overnight)
Probably not, if I had to guess.
I suppose it depends on where you draw the line though. I’m old enough to remember when public access channels would sign off, and some other local ones would have “no programming” listed in the TV guide for the overnight hours. But largely, I remember the infomercials or silent ads that were either static text on a screen or delivered like a news ticker.
I remember some local stations signing off at night in America even in the late 1990s.
In Japan, most local stations still sign off, but only for a couple of hours deep into the night before the earliest news shows begin.
There are probably some tv stations in other countries that just can’t operate 24 hours.
The movie Poltergeist showed them signing off and that was early 80’s.
If by “been there” you mean playing video games instead of drinking.
